Piano keys making a clunking sound
on: February 19, 2021, 05:31:06 PM
Several piano keys in this range started making this weird clunking sound after my piano tech was here fixing a damper pedal flange. Anyone know what's going on? It's nonexistent until you start playing louder. This is a Boston GP 163.

hi,jmusical
I don't think the key  weird clunking is related to the pedal flange fix there.
There may be 2 reasons:
1. The plank above the keys was fixed strongly (down off immersed on the keys more that it was) or it was lost down cloth wich glued on plank there.
2. That key do clunking when it's catch in  to key frame (board) of your keyboard. There is no felt washers under the key (a wool front rail punching was eaten  moth ) there it.
Second option I'm think here. Try to find where  clunking is coming from. Press this key firmly and lower your head under the keyboard in that time. And you be hearing there it's clunk  .
good luck,

I have very similar clanking on several keys, but only in winter when the heating is on and the air in the house is dry. In spring it'll be fine again  ;D Unfortunately, acoustic pianos are not very good with moisture changes, so such things happen. Surely, you could have it fixed, but it may be only temporary.
Have you had that piano long? Did you experience such things before?

I finally had my piano tech come and look at it- turns out the glide bolts were loose. Quick and easy fix - and no more knocking! Thank goodness!
