Piano colour - does it matter?
on: April 15, 2003, 10:01:30 AM
Hi!

I've been wondering, is the colour of a piano important?

Does it matter whether it is black, white, or brown?

What colour piano do you guys have?  I've got a brown Yamaha grand.

Thanks!

Why does it matter?

Its really depends on what you like.
I personally like a black piano with shiny finish  :D
It looks very nice just like those steinways in concert halls which sometimes blinds you if your too close.

Yeah I didn't think the colour mattered either...

But I heard somewhere you should try and go for a black piano.  No idea why though - maybe its just because most concert grands are black?

Or maybe it's just your personal perference.

I like a satin ebony finish on a piano.  It's the color for the serious artist.

Mine is black, but high gloss.  Like a parrot, I am fascinated with bright, shiny objects.

Maybe colour does matter......Black absorbs more heat so if you don't like hot pianos get a white one....this may sound ridiculous but its just a scientific thought.... ;D

There was an ad in a magazine that said over 90% of pianists prefer to play on black Steinway grands!

I've loosened up my position on this particular question, and have realized that there are actually three good options for piano color for the serious pianist--black, black, and black.   :)

I have a light creme coloured grand, which matches some of our furniture.

Check out the above link. That is a great colour for a piano and I like the design, not to mention that it is a Steinway as well.

Cheers ;D

I have a glossy dark-brown upright. My mom bought it to match the furniture. Black seems almost too serious for me--too severe and unforgiving.

Hi,

My piano is a black one..(Korg....)....

Don't run me off....I had a Richard Lipp 1875, 6'2" and let a guy talk me out of it...(but he has the money to REALLY re-build it...) He will leave the strings...Hand drawn wire, and ALL still intact...(I shoulda kept it, I guess...overtones were killer..) I hope to buy another piano soon....see a good one sometimes on the auctions..

i have played on green, yellowish, golden, reddish, brown, white and black pianos, but have not noticed the difference in my playing due to this cosmetic color. tds

ps. now, if the color is bright, shinning PINK, it might affect my state of level-headedness abit  ;D

I have a white piano, and love it - the price was reduced because more people wanted a black piano, but the soudn is gorgeous. However, with a black piano with a glossy finish, you can watch your fingers move in the fallboard and check on your technique from a different angle. However, this can sometimes become distracting, especially in a performance setting. Overall, though, I don't think the color affects the sound or tone of the instrument, although I could be wrong since I'm not a scientist...

I think the whole reflection thing is great for people watching you as they can see you hands clearly in the reflection from standing behind you. I have a fond memory of watching my friend (awesome jazz pianist) play like lightning up and down the piano in the reflection.

that crystal and cream-colored piano is nice....

i used to always want a white grand... but somehow that changed and i decided to go with traditional black, satin finish (shiny finish shows scratches and finger prints too much!)... i've got a yamaha. beautiful sound, 2nd best next to steinway, i'd say.

If i had the choice and there was one out there i'd chose a pink baby grand. Id also be able to keep all my other instruments tucked underneath it.

When Practice Stagnates – Breaking the Performance Ceiling: Robotic Training for Pianists

“Practice makes perfect” is a common mantra for any pianist, but we all know it’s an oversimplification. While practice often leads to improvement, true perfection is elusive. But according to recent research, a robotic exoskeleton hand could help pianists improve their speed of performing difficult pianistic patterns, by overcoming the well-known “ceiling effect”.
