suggestions to fill gaps in repetoire?
on: March 16, 2022, 07:56:05 AM
Hi,
I've been a pianist since 2018 and over the last half year I've made a significant jump in the difficulty of pieces I'm playing. In early-mid 2021 I was learning pieces like Allegro Scherzando (Haydn) and Sonatina Op 36 no 3 (Clementi) but starting in late 2021 I started learning significantly more difficult pieces like the Deux Arabesques and Fantaisie Impromptu.

Basically, I have an intermediate-sized gap in my repertoire now, that doesn't seem to be shrinking because all of the pieces I plan to learn in the near future are just as difficult or slightly less difficult then pieces like the 2 listed above.

Does anyone have suggestions to help fill my repertoire, after I get over my current Debussy and Chopin obsessions?

There is lots of great music to fill those gaps.

Baroque - Lots of movements from Bach's keyboard suites would be harder than Clementi Sonatinas and easier than the Chopin, as would many movements from Handel's keyboard suites

Classical - some of the Mozart sonatas are in that range, but also all the Sonatinas by Kuhlau, which are easier than many of the Mozart ones, and are melodic and enjoyable to play

Romantic - Schubert's Ab Impromptu Op. 142 is lovely and approachable, there are some relatively easy short pieces by Schumann that might fit the bill, as well as some of Brahms' waltzes. Have a look at Chopin's easier Mazurka's, if you want Chopin.

Post-Romantic Some of the movements from Janacek's On an Overgrown Path are not too difficult and very beautiful.

You can easily find youtube recordings of these things, so I won't add them here.
