What should i learn next?
on: April 25, 2022, 05:12:27 AM
Hi everybody! I’m new to this forum. I’m a quite advanced piano studend. I need to start a new repertoire for this summer, any suggestions? The last pieces I’ve played are Chopin’s Etude Op.10 N.4,6 and 12, Liszt Paganini etude
“La Chasse”, Beethoven sonata op.27 n1, Brahms op.118 and Rach prelude in C#. Thanks in advance!

It's impossible but based on what you showed here I'd recommend Beethoven's Op. 53 and perhaps Chopin 3rd Ballade. I love Op. 25 No. 5 for Chopin etudes, it might be my favourite.
Second Year Undergrad:
Bach BWV 914
Beethoven Op. 58
Reger Op. 24 No. 5
Rachmaninoff Op. 39 No. 3 & No. 5

What do you mean with “It’s impossible”? Btw, thanks for your suggestions!

Welcome to the forum! I thought something similar and my take on it is that there is like a bazillion pieces from a million composers I could theoretically recommend. It would help if you narrowed down the question a bit, like what kind of repertoire would you like to explore? What are your strengths, weaknesses? What is your favorite type of pieces to play? Otherwise I'll just take a bunch of random shots in the dark or recommend you my own favorite pieces, but I'm not sure how helpful that is. So I'd love to recommend you some pieces but I think you need to help us out in narrowing it down a bit more :D

Thanks! I’m sorry for my “stupid” question. So, I’d like to play a new Beethoven sonata, some romantic pieces (etudes, scherzi…) and something from 1900 (for exemple, lately i’ve been really intrested on Ravel).  I have a very good musical maturity. My hands are a bit weak tho. I was thinking about Paganini etude n1 at the moment. I hope I made my question clear now!

I don't see anything "stupid" about your question. I said it's impossible for the same reason anacrusis gave.

Since you like Beethoven sonatas I'll give a few more of those. Op. 31 are three differing characters which are all worthwhile in exploring. None of them are quite as grand as Op. 53 but still.

The first 3 Chopin scherzi some more pieces I'd recommend.

Ravel has a lot of beautiful music. I'm personally eying his Sonatine to study in the fall, but we'll see where that goes.
Second Year Undergrad:
Bach BWV 914
Beethoven Op. 58
Reger Op. 24 No. 5
Rachmaninoff Op. 39 No. 3 & No. 5

I think you should generate your own list of pieces you would like to learn. Start listening to more music with the sheets, there really is no excuse these days not to do that, there is so much information out there.

Thanks! I will listen to Ravel’s sonatine. Talking about Beethoven sonatas, I would also enjoy Les adieux or op.90

Op. 90 is great. I'm playing it right now. It's a favourite of mine as well, both movements are almost a taster of the late style while also being approachable.
