Difficulty of Chopin op 10 no.4
on: June 15, 2023, 08:44:27 AM
Hi
Relating to my other post, I was wondering what y'all's have to say about the difficulty of the Chopin etude op. 10/4. Is that a good etude to continue with, having already played op 25/1+2?
Would love some feedback!
Pete

If you can do Op 25 no 2 well you have a good foundation for Op 10 no 4. It is a step up in difficulty (a few bars in the middle in particular), but it should not be impossible for you if you can comfortably manage op 25 no 1+2.

Looking at your previous rep and having never heard you play, Op. 10 No. 4 seems like a tad bit of a stretch, but I haven't played it to be certain.
You can't go wrong trying it, but I'd try another more 'mid' tier etude before moving on to 10/4. How about 25/5? It has an absolutely stunning middle section and the outer sections are very playful yet moody.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll send a little excerpt of me playing so you can give me more accurate feedback.
Yes op. 25/5 is quite something. What would y'all's say would be a good next etude for me, next to 25/5? ( I mean, great piece, but I need some choice...)

Op 10 no 4 is indeed more difficult than Op 25 no 1 or 2 but like, you don't have to get it up to max speed to benefit from studying it.
Some "easier" Etudes include
Op 10 no 3
Op 10 no 6
Op 10 no 9
Op 25 no 7
Around or lightly below the level of 10 no 4 you'll find stuff like
10 no 5
10 no 12
25 no 12

I would learn at least a few of the "medium" difficulty Chopin etudes first. (bold are the ones that would help most)
op. 10: 5,
8
, 9, 10,
11
,
12
op. 25:
4
, 5, 7, 8, 9
I've played 14 of the etudes. What makes op. 10 no. 4 the most menacing to me is the constant shifting difficulties. You can never get too comfortable. I wouldn't attempt it soon, if you struggled at all with your first 2 Chopin etudes.

THANKYOU for your advice. There are definitely mid tier etudes that I love.
