Program dilemma
on: September 22, 2023, 10:52:23 AM
So I was going to play at a piano festival in a couple of months and given the time of year I'd planned to play Scriabin's 9th followed by Debussy's Cloches à travers les feuilles. However the 15 min slot I thought I had actually turned out to be for another festival next year; the November one is only 12 mins. Which I'm really annoyed about as I loved my program idea.

I'd like to keep the Scriabin as I've put a lot of work into it (the Debussy is something I learned a decade ago and was just polishing up). But that only leaves me c.2 mins for something else. I thought of maybe adding something from Scriabin's op.11 as they all fit time-wise, but they don't feel as 'right' as the Debussy did. The easy option is to just use the Debussy which frees up loads of space for an alternative themed program (Feux d'artifice or something) but I thought it was worth asking if anyone had suggestions for things that could work with the Scriabin before making that call...

I don't have a good specific suggestion but I had a thought that you could either
- Contrast the sonata with a short, early Scriabin work as an introduction, to show how his style evolved and ease the audience into the experience of the 9th sonata
- Find a late work to likewise use as an introduction, that fits the style and tone of the sonata to create a unified whole

Thanks for the ideas! I'm thinking of going with the Poeme op.71 no.1 as it uses a motif from the 8th sonata and it's learnable in the time I have left.
