How hard is it to get into the Liszt Academy?
on: September 24, 2023, 11:28:16 PM
Do I have any chance at all of being admitted here?

I got a Bachelor's in Piano Performance and am from a 3rd world country.

Liszt is my favorite composer though and I desire to take Graduate studies there. But I don't know how probable that is...

Anyone ever studied there or know a friend who did?

Thank you.

I have visited the place and heard many students play. The technical level was overall high with some surprising exceptions. It's impossible to tell if you have a chance to get in without hearing you play.

I'm not sure I was impressed by the actual teaching there, though.

In general, I would advice people who are interested in certain schools or teachers to look for an opportunity to have a private lesson with a teacher from that palce or the teacher you are interested in. That enables you to get a feel for the thing and to receive advice on how to proceed from the teacher.

Hi lelle, thanks for your response.

Have you seen any teaching occur at the Academy?

I actually tried surfing online to find student reviews but have found very little. I wish there was more of that online.

As to my playing, well, the hardest I've seriously performed are the Schumann Concerto, Scriabin fantasy, etc. This was during my college years.

Would you be open to a private message? I could send an audio sample of my playing if you allow.

Yes I've sat and listened to lessons given by maybe half a dozen teachers there to various students. This was maybe a decade ago. Hard to know if the teachers changed their approach knowing there was an audience, but at the same time they were teaching their regular students so it wasn't a typical masterclass setting.

Sure I can give it a listen. To be honest though I don't know enough about the Liszt academy admission to give you a trustworthy assessment if you can get in. Students are typically equipped to play the normal repertoire so it's more a question of how well you play it.

Well Liszt is my favorite composer so I kind of want to experience how it is like to be in that environment. Also for the added credentials and experience.

I do need to take up a Graduate program anyways that is related to my interest

Getting the energy vibes experience. Got it. It certainly is good just make sure to entertain several options and weigh pro and con. Avoid eggs in a basket. The piano universe can ironically be both a lonely and sociable a path.
