Using a monitor with an upright piano
on: March 27, 2024, 06:28:08 PM
I have macular degeneration, which means I can’t read sheet music that’s sitting on the music stand of my upright piano. Since most of what I play is classical, the sheet music is readily available online. However, at the moment my only computing device is an ipad, and the screen is too small to show more than a couple of measures at a time. I’m thinking of getting a monitor that would rest on the stand, but it would have to big enough to display a full page in portrait mode at maybe 2x magnification. Does anybody have any suggestions?
PS I’ve been focusing on the monitor, but if I also need to get a laptop or desktop, I will. A friend has generously offered to pay for the whole thing.

To show a full page of sheet music at 2x magnification, a monitor between 27" and 32" would likely be ideal. A larger monitor will give you the clarity and size you need without constant scrolling. A higher resolution monitor (e.g., 4K) will provide better clarity and help you see details even when the page is magnified.
Specific Monitor Suggestions
• LG 32UN880-B 32" UltraFine Display Ergo: This is a 4K monitor with great adjustability and would work well in portrait mode for sheet music. The Ergo stand offers flexibility in positioning.
• Dell UltraSharp U2720Q 27": A highly regarded 4K monitor with excellent color accuracy and the ability to pivot into portrait mode. It’s slightly smaller but could still work.
• BenQ PD3220U 32" 4K: This is another good choice, offering a large, clear display and strong color accuracy.
