Favorite Bach prelude and fugue
on: May 21, 2024, 11:26:52 PM
What is your favorite Bach pair of pieces with a fugue and an introductory piece? It has to be from the pair and it can be from the wtc, the little prelude and fugue, toccata and fugues, or a miscellaneous work like the chromatic fantasia and fugue.
I am currently working on:
Bach p&f in c minor wtc book 1
Beethoven op 2 no 1 first movement
Chopin Black keys etude

I love the WTC 1's C-sharp Major Prelude and Fugue for the pastoral pulse and jaunty nature. That's closely followed by the remarkable counterpoint in the C-sharp Minor P&F from the same book.
last 3 schubert sonatas and piano trios are something else

WTC 1 C# minor for me as well lol. Haven't heard all of them though, so that opinion might change.

I love the C sharp minor too but I also love the one in Eb/d# minor. I also love the last one of book 1 mainly because of the fugue. I love the chromatic feeling of the subject. Also the f minor in book 1 bc the prelude is gorgeous and the c minor and f minor of book 2.
I am currently working on:
Bach p&f in c minor wtc book 1
Beethoven op 2 no 1 first movement
Chopin Black keys etude

Including organ works, my favorite is Prelude and "Saint Anne" fugue in Eb major, BWV 552.

Not including organ, my favorite is Chromatic Fantasia and Fugue, BWV 903.

Just discovered this fine performance of BWV 552 - the greatest work ever written in this category IMO.

I love the St/ Anne but it doesn't work for piano...
I love the B-flat minor prelude and fugue from WTC1, Sounds so mature.
