My daughter and I would like to thank the members of this board, and Bernhard who encouraged her to expand her repertoire with some Scarlatti sonatas.  She recently won a local music competition with a dazzling Scarlatti k.201.  Even though the judges were not as familiar with the Scarlatti as the other pieces played in the competition, it was nice to see that no matter if the piece is familiar it is the performance of the music itself that is appreciated.  So thanks, everyone for the recommendations and tips on new pieces.  Now she has the difficult choice of choosing her first public performance piece - the Scarlatti or Malaguena by Lecuona. She loves them both equally, the Scarlatti for opening or Malaguena as crowd pleaser?  Her teacher thought the Malaguena a bit too "Hollywood", but will defer to her choice since it is a public recital, and it is her moment to shine.  Also, for future reference and consideration for other competitions, is Malaguena considered a competition/classical composition, or more for show?  She values the opinions on this board.  Thanks, Lani

Thanks for both replies. She has been playing seriously for over a few years now.   Also, I have created a separate post on what qualifies as classical as I'm sure this might be an interesting topic! Regards, Lani

Yes, congratulations to your daughter!  :D  Her accomplishment is even more impressive if the piece she played (Scarlatti) was considered unusual - one never knows how judges will react to that - some may be overjoyed not to have to listen to the smae battered repertory, but some may react negatively.

As for Malaguena, it is definitely considered a classical piece, although Lecuona was a bit of a crossover between classical and popular (google him and read his official site, it is very interesting).

Best wishes,
Bernhard.
