Well personally, I was at my friend's house today. He had to put on some music, ya know, the general stuff people like nowadays. All of the stuff I heard was insanely repetitive and boring, and I heard myself hearing the same tonic to dominant chords being played incessantly. My ears almost fell off. Let's be honest, most of the so called "musicians" nowadays, don't know how to read music, and some don't even know how to sing, resorting either to lip-syncing or yelling! Come on, that's the epitome of terrible. And the music sounds like it was worked on for a few days. Give me some good synthesizers, a decent singer, and optionally, a lyricist, and I could make something over three times better than any of these people.
And rap, that isn't music. Put that under spoken word. Really. Little sense of melody, and absolutely no harmony at times. All just the damn rythm. And guess what? It's always similar. And we are referring of course to the mainstream stuff that everyone listens to. You can't expect us to be counting all the stuff few people listen to. You know, there is a reason why "Drop it Like it's Hot" is much more popular than lots of the other stuff you are probably thinking about. I once had the misfortune of hearing this nonsense garble. How could anyone even like this pile of cacophonous mixtures of sounds. Dare it even be compared to sound? It's not like there was even a remotely interesting beat to it. Absolutely no melody or something memorable besides the uttered phrase which correlates with the title. Some rap is ok, and I don't mind Eminem too much as he's a little bit crazy and weird, and he likes to say whatever he likes, which makes me have hope that maybe freedom of speech still exists. Plus he doesn't have a drum set as the only instrument audible in his music. Anyways, I'm done with my little rant here.
