Kiwanis Festival Results

Day at the piano festival went good, the adjudicator was ''Ronald Tomarelli''

From 1989 to 1992 Mr. Tomarelli did post graduate work at the Faculty of Music, University of Toronto. Mr. Tomarelli is also a graduate of the Toronto school of the Alexander Technique.

Mr Tomarelli travels extensively for the Ontario Registered Music Teachers' Association conducting lectures and demonstrations of the Alexander Technique as applied to piano teaching and performance. Mr Tomarelli is a Steinway artist, a member of the Canadian Music Festival Adjudicators' Association and is a member of the Faculty of Music at Acadia University in Nova Scotia.

Haydn Divertimento in C Maj, 2nd Movement

A very smooth touch with refinement emerging in the interpretation. Could you vary the articulation in more expression? Bars One and similar could have the quarter notes detached. Trills were precise but not always entirely reliable. Now add some dynamic shone (?) and contrast to be more convincing and effective. Good work!

Sight Reading 15 years and under
He told me to pick one piece, he had two lying up. I picked the easier. He said it was a good choice.

This was very well done with accuracy. Skillful pedalling - a steady tempo and musical expression. Obviously, this was easy and comfortable for your level. You could blend the 2 hands into a more cohesive texture -- They sounded a bit singular. Otherwise, excellent!

For Susanna Kyle

Your opening was very slow, notey and static. You really started to play in Bar 9. The phrasing needs some direction - You drop off on the last note in each bar instead of remaining with the sound - You stop it. Some sensitivity to the changing harmonies was apparent but try not to let the music stall on tied notes.

I played those pieces two days ago, yesterday I played Elfin Dance..

Elfin Dance #4
85 (Distinction Mark, Awared Honors)
This performance had drama and much musical character throughout. Make sure the staccatos are crisp and clear all the way through to the end. They constrast the longer melodic smooth melodic lines you were a bit careless in this regard. Make sure to get a good solid start in the 8th note sections. Your hand cordination was a bit insecure on 2nd page. Otherwise, the piece was interesting and convincing. Well done..

I'm quite happy (: Two classes left. Schumann Waltz and Organ class.

HAHA!  Ron is my teacher!  That is hilarious!  Sorry, I find this amusing, obviously.  He's great!  Well done.  So what did you think of him?  I won't tell him.....maybe.......

Now, /that/ is interesting. I found it utterly enjoyable. Really, I appreciated the extra self condfidence his adjudicating gave me. Like, before he commented I felt like I had no musicality. So that was a good thing. Nice marks too. I didn't know if I got what he meant by when I held notes in my Bernstein they were static but anyway.
