List works that you play that are outside Classical
on: April 28, 2005, 03:20:51 PM
I don't know whether this thread will be succesful but only time will tell.

Outside of classical there are a number of solos i have learnt or would like to learn including:-

Copacabana - Barry Manilow
- I haven't actually learnt this particular version yet as it is pretty difficult, i definately would not be able to sight read it. If anyone is interested in a copy leave your e-mail address and i will be able to e-mail it saturday at the earliest.

All The Things You Are
- I have a book called Piano Stylings of the Great Standards which has this piece in it, very nice standard.

Summertime - Gershwin
- I am sure that many people know this standard, it isn't difficult to play but it is a very reognisable tune.

Come Fly With Me - Frank Sinatra

And now for a really big contrast i also want to purchase the music from Alladin as it will bring back childhood memories of watching the films for the first time. I am particularly keen on the arabian nights tune which makes me think of the desert every time i hear it.

There are a few things i like to play outside classical but as i said i do not know if this thread will be succesful. I imagine that there are a lot of pianists here who play nothing but classical. I thought it would be an interesting contrast to see if there are many who play things outside of the genre and enjoy it.

Feel free to contribute everyone.

I'm always in the process of transcribing video game music - it is satisfying to play and great to hear a good MegaMan rendition every now and then.

I don't care if discussing this topic makes this thread unpopular in the future. I will pursue it anyway.

I beleive that some of the composers of video game music are very talented.
When I played Shinobi 2 on the game gear there is one level where a fantastic tune is being played. It sounds as if it could easily be a genius classical composition and i could see a really good piano solo part for it. This was a few years ago, however there are so many VGs that i can imagine fantastic piano solos for including:-

Sonic Series
Zelda
Megaman (Like You Said)
Streets Of Rage
Street Fighter 2 - I love the song that is played on DeeJay's level, very latin america style stuff.

The list goes on and on. Unfortunetely i haven't pursued all of the titles above and the only game music that i have pursued is the Sims.

It's very positive that people have transcribed just about all of the titles i have mentioned into good piano arrangements. I hate transcribing things myself as it takes up so much time and i am not very good at it so it is good that people have done it for others. It seems that you are one of them allchopin, if so keep it up as it's helpful.

Most of the titles i have mentioned i know are available, however i am not sure regarding Street Fighter 2 - DJs theme-----do you know anything regarding this?

As I play my own music 90% of the time it therefore follows that most of my time is spent outside classical music. Of other people's pieces I probably play more ragtime than anything else, particularly James Scott, Scott Joplin, David Roberts and one or two of Frank French and Hal Isbitz. I also enjoy playing the stride transcriptions of Johnson, Waller, Mary Lou Williams and Morton. I have an occasional trip through the fake book twisting the tunes up a bit if I'm in the mood.

I would like to get into Scott Joplin's ragtime pieces sometime. I am speifically interested in Bethena Concert Rag, Fig Leaf Rag and Maple Leaf Rag. However there are many more that i would love to play.

Joe Hisaishi is sooo amazing! My friend is really into video games and she also plays the piano, so she got me into playing them myself. Anime soundtracks are also great, specially for listeners that want some lighter music. :)

I like to play Gershwin and -I know it's cliche- I like Yiruma too.. People in restaurants like it because it doesn't really asks for attention, but it's relaxing.

I play a ton of stuff from video games - because all of my friends recognize it AND some of that stuff is really difficult.
Interested in discussing:

-Prokofiev Toccata
-Scriabin Sonata 2

I play video game music, too.
Mostly stuff from Piano Squall, a pianist which travels usa for anime convention and plays on them for charity. He got a website with free sheets, too. Check www.pianosquall.com.

Nubuo Uematsu was the one who got me into classical music. Heard all his pieces upside down, its really easy listening.

Here's a pop song by Mae that's universally touching:

Like some of the above posters, I LOVE video game music

The Diablo theme song translates beautifully onto the piano:

This video game piece is also very pretty:

yay for my first post!

I play a lot of things outside of classical.  For example, in the retirement shows I play, I mostly play old standards and Broadway showtunes, from Oscar and Hammerstein to things Frank Sinatra sang.  I also do originals and classical, and I do pop from then up until now, it just depends.  I've played a Mozart Fantasy in the same show that I've played the title track from "Beauty and the Beast."

Then, of course, there's the fact that I'm also a hip hop artist, so I play piano in my own rap songs.  Lol.
