Geeks of the Piano Forum Unite!

Let us converse about our geekdom.
You need more than a piano, two hands and a brain to play music.  You also need hot sauce.

OK.  I am afraid that I would have to be included in the "geek" category.  I do computer sstuff for a living, as well as play the piano.  Is that official enough for you?

I was a geek when I was young and I'm still a geek now at fifty-seven in the eyes of most people around here where I live. I was never prepared to bend over backwards to change myself to suit fashion or society. I have always just been myself, geeky or otherwise. After many years you realise that feeling differently about many things is a pretty good way to be and you get very proud of it. It gives you insights into all sorts of things. I've kept my friends, some for more than fifty years. I've experienced love, marriage, family - all the sustaining life forces - without compromising my geekness an inch. It doesn't mean you can't interact socially - the trick is not to change yourself to do it - be yourself and others can take it or leave it.

Nerd here.  Computers.  Piano.  Music theory.  Violin.  Technicalities.  Vocab size woes.  Obsessions.  Obsessions with rules.  Maths.  Physics.  And I actually like studying.  (Out of class.  Some classes are boring enough to make you hate a subject)

In my class, we have an unofficial nerd club.  Five members.  To qualify as a nerd, you've got to be really elite.  High grades are a minimum.  And we have privilages. :D

anorak   Noun. An often socially inept person, having an obsessive interest in a hobby or subject. Usually has little or no fashion sense, and errs towards eccentricity. Originates from the 'trainspotter' look, of wearing anoraks; spending so much time at the end of station platforms in all weathersnecessitates the wearing of such attire. Cf. 'trainspotter'. Derog

Are you geeks and nerds distinguished from anoraks by your fashion sense?

I think the following joke is very funny

Heisenburg is driving down the road, and a cop pulls him over.  The cop walks up and asks Heisenburg, "do you know how fast you were going?"  Heisenburg responds, "No, but I know exactly where I am." :D

If you thought that joke was funny, you are officially a nerd.

It's a history joke.  It refers to the Babylonian captivity.  Basically, in the 1300's there were two popes.  One stationed in Rome and one in France.  People were split on who the real pope was.

Thank you for getting my joke!  I don't get to tell it very often.  The papal schism (word geeks can check the O.E.D. for various pronunciations of schism) was something like the late 1300's, when the Italians already had a pope, then the French elected another one, and a council that was formed to sort it all out ended up electing a third.  I don't think it lasted long...

I did not get the Heisenberg, but my husband thought it was funny, so I guess I'm a geek by association.
