i homeschooled my kids for a few years, but we didn't get into fermentation in science. when i was growing up, my parents decided to make beer. they tried different recipies and one came out pretty good. homemade beer and rootbeer are the best. i don't know about wine.
btw - i think i had more fun in homeschooling than even my children. we built a mousetrap car to race with other homeschool kids (my son was hs from 1-4th grade). you use cd's for wheels, make it out of lightweight balsa wood, and glue a mousetrap on the top, which you pull back the spring (using a long dowel) and let it rip.
besides that, we went to individual art classes, had time for music, etc. etc. my kids were really happy. i put them in school and they became obsessed with tests. i really like the public system otherwise in pennsylvania, though. the teachers are great! and, they go on lots of field trips, and do have fun. i think whatever you do, do it with your might. if you homeschool - do it the best you can. if you go to public - don't let the little details make the big picture bad. there's advantages to both.
