Lately for encores I play:Mendelssohn--Rachmaninov, Scherzo (Midsummernight)
It seems like basically ANYTHING can be played these days for encores.
What are some good encore pieces you think would well compliment Beethoven's Concerto #3
anything from the 24 chopin etudes....
esp op. 10 no. 1, 4op. 25 no. 11, 12
How about Goldberg Variations?... I know, Serkin already did it, but... with all repeats?
Could work...Out of curiosity, what is so special about those, as opposed to other 23? I mean... how any of those would have that implied very special impact specifically after Beethoven Concerto No.3?
op.10 no.4 is a great encore, the ending is....sigh...I love it.
hey marik!is that real? one hour of encore?
richter also once said that op. 10 no. 4 is a good choice for encore
Where did you get this information?
Yep, young R. Serkin--famous story. Google it.
Where did you get this information? Shocked
"the 4th Etude, as an encore, wasn't bad either"
If action speaks louder than words:....
Ah, in Russian he says "and 4th etude as an encore. Came out not bad."Yeah, I was at his recital where as an encore he played Brahms-Paganini entire 2nd book, and another concert complete Haydn Sonata... I guess those are also good encore pieces...

I have never said that Opus. 10 No. 4 was a good encore piece, I just pointed out that Richter played it as an encore.
Do you think Richter played Opus. 10 No. 4 as an encore because he didn't think it was a good encore piece?
Contrary to how it might come accross, I was not arguing with you. I never said or implied you said this, esp. considering the fact, in your original message you wrote: "I have to admit never having read that Richter said that he thought that opus. 10 No. 4 was a good encore."And yes, I know that he played it as an encore frequently (and BTW, in a main program, as well) throughout many years. No, I don't think so. The only intention of that my message was: 1) to bring to peoples attention the fact that Richter never publicly said that Chopin Op.10/4 is a good encore piece (in respond to Kiwi_bd), and 2) to show that if to assume that "action speaks louder than words" apparently, for S. Richter Brahms-Paganini, or entire Haydn Sonata were good encore pieces, as well.I heard that on one ocasion he played entire Diabelli Variations as an encore... with all repeats .Obviously, for Richter that choice was just as good.Hopefully, now it does not leave any confusion.Best, M
Hi hwangs,An idea for a first quiet encore would be "Lilacs" by Rachmaninoff.A virtuosic "bring down the house" second encore would be Bortkiewicz's Impromptu, Op. 24, No. 3, "Eros". I've recorded both pieces and posted them in the Audition Room Forum, if you're unfamiliar with them.
It seems like basically ANYTHING can be played these days for encores. Maybe something very light and short. Or something magnificent (like Liszt or something)What are some good encore pieces you think would well compliment Beethoven's Concerto #3 OR What are some encore pieces that you have played for your recital(s)/concert(s)?? Any suggestions?
Liszt Dante Sonata
Chopin 1st BalladeLiszt Dante SonataBach Goldberg Variations.Yes, I really have heard of all three being used as encores. (First two were John Ogdon, I forget the perpetrator of the third.)
Rimsky-Korsakov - Flight of the Bumblebee (arr. Rachmaninov)
Rachmaninov prelude op 23 no 6 in Eb
Lol...that one is more like, lame? So much done...What?!? No!! That is a beautiful piece! Cheesy is Schumann/Liszt Widmung!
I believe Chopin's Polonaise Op.53 is in A flat major
Both of these aren't overplayed, and are short-ish pieces, but are immensely powerful finishing pieces
