Upcoming Piano Competitions- and discussion
on: August 20, 2015, 02:25:54 AM
What are some of the competitions coming up? I can think of:

- The Busoni
- The Chopin

Which candidates do you think are promising in both competitions? For the Chopin, I think the younger crop- Tiffany Poon, Annie Zhou, etc. - are exceptional, and so are some of the pianists on the other side of the "age spectrum," e.g. Charles-Richard Hamelin.
For the Busoni: Cao Bolai is a GREAT, consistent, and hard-working pianist, and Kausikan Rajeshkumar plays incredibly cleanly, though some people may find his tone too brittle in quality...

Leeds Competition
Telekom Beethoven Competition
2016:

No; the competition actually doesn't start until the 26th I believe :P
I knew of Cao's playing and Rajeshkumar's playing from other competitions that I had followed on the Internet (the Ettlingen and the Chopin qualifier, respectively)

I'm think the preliminaries for the busoni passed and the semi final rounds are on 26th I could be wrong though and I've seen Rajeshkumar's playing and he has a good technique and tone.
Also I think we should get the Leeds competition into this discussion the Liszt competition winner Vitaly Pisarenko is gonna compete at Leeds and I think it will be interesting to see if he still has the skill to win and so is the 2014 Busoni 2nd place winner(first place wasn't awarded) Rhodolfo leone but I don't think leone will even place.

The 13th UNISA International Competition in January/February 2016.

This time they are combining Jazz and Classical.
The National competition was similar. Since I enjoy both, it was interesting and enjoyable to hear them mixed.
It required a few mindshifts though!

I am looking forward to the International one. Jazz piano is certainly entertaining and can be very interesting too. Previous competitions had some really excellent pianists.

Hmm depends on how you define "preliminary" and "semi-finals."

I would say the huge, sweeping "elimination" (or "qualifier" to use sports terms :P) of the Busoni passed already (last year), and the 26th is going to be the "first round" with 30 competitors.

"WHAT"S HAPPEING WITH COMPETITIONS THESE DAYS? Ji-yeong Mun's playing is.. is.. PLAIN, BLAND< and LIFELESS."
-my ex at the conservatory ;D I kinda agree ;) I mean, I couldn't play that well, but there sure were competitors far better than her. I was listening live to her Round 1 live the other day, and I was like, "she'll definitely be written off". I was TERRIBLY wrong. But I guess people have different tastes, cause she won the Geneva Concours as well.

OK, so yeah Kyle ;D, you were right, Minsoo Hong got 4th, AGAIN ;D
Facebook followers of the Competition said that the true winner was Alberto Ferro, with his stunning Bartok concerto. Some said that Roman should've won. I find it ASTOUNDING that Colafelice only won 6th. To me, he and Alexander Gadgiev had some of the most un-plain performances in the whole competition!

Good taste? Or not good taste?

From the Leeds:

Quote
TOMOKI KITAMURA- Schumann Concerto
HEEJAE KIM- Beethoven Concerto 4
YUN WEI- Rach 3
DREW PETERSEN- Rach 1
VITALY PISARENKO- Rach 3
ANNA TCYBULEVA- Brahms 2

Not even half of the finalists (or whoever chose the concerti for them) have "good taste". Well, that's not what I think, but I'm sure TONS of people here will agree.

there are Brahms jokes?

anyway, I haven't paid much attention to the Leeds. The Leeds did bring out great piano players e.g. Perahia, Uchida, Schiff (as controversial as he may be)... But as for the Leeds winners after the 2000s or so, "where are they now??"

Oh, did you know Brahms was not such a heavy man when he wrote his Paganni Variations? He was in his late 20s/early 30s. You can basically tell his growth rate by looking at his music.

Op. 35 Very clean music
Op. 79 Less clean
Op. 117-119 VERY HEAVY MUSIC
