ALRIGHT, everyone read this (Beethoven)
on: July 12, 2005, 06:26:42 PM
MAN!!

Everyone here needs to listen to Garrick Ohlsson's Beethoven sonatas!!!
I can't stand him never being mentioned!

Anyone who posts their e-mail in this thread (unless it gets to be a humongous amount) will get their choice of either

1.  A movement from the Appassionata
2.  A movement from the op 109 in e major
3.  Op 2 no 1 in f minor

Recorded by Garrick Ohlsson.

Who needs Arrau, Brendel, Solomon, etc.  This guy KNOWS his Beethoven and everyone needs to at least hear him.

This guy is amazing.  If you don't want me to send you one of those movements, than please, check it out at https://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000000T89/qid=1121192745/sr=1-14/ref=sr_1_14/104-8328416-6225565?v=glance&s=music

Never seeing his name mentioned is driving me nuts.

hey musicdarkangel --

aquariuswb here (remember me? we got in a stupid flame war like a month ago). Why the new handle you ask? (And you DID ask!) Before Piano Street and Piano Forum merged, I had already registered with Piano Street under this username (mwarner1). Once they merged, I followed the instructions to re-register with PF, but it wouldn't let me because I used the same E-mail address for Piano Street and PF originally; it kept giving me the error message that my E-mail address is already linked with another username -- the one I am using right now. "Aquariuswb" seems to be gone forever in PF... what a pain in the butt...

Anyway... glad we can agree on something, because I recently saw Garrick Ohlsson play Opp. 109, 110, and 111 in concert, and it was UNBELIEVABLE. You are dead-on when you say that this man knows his Beethoven. I have not heard any of his CDs, but if they are anything like these live performances, I MUST get them! He blew me away with all three of those sonatas. I didn't expect this pianist who specializes in Chopin to be able to handle the Op. 111 Arietta, but BOY WAS I WRONG! Now that you started this thread, I'm just going to have to go buy some of his CDs. Thanks for affirming my sentiments!

I'm sorry but it seems that the 4th mvt. file for op. 2 no. 1 is incomplete...or perhaps it's something with my computer.

And what I've heard so far is quite impressive.

Thank you,

I send these files, multiple at a time, and after who knows how many minutes, some of the pages get errors.

It's so frustrating.

I know him. I own his version of Busoni´s Concerto.

However, Brendel is still the king when we talk about Beethoven.
The masterpiece tell the performer what to do, and not the performer telling the piece what it should be like, or the cocomposer what he ought to have composed.

nah.

By the eye of the general public, he might be.

Compared to Ohlsson, Brendel (my formor choice) sounds so reserved, held back, unpassionate.

I don't care if he brings out the melodies... Ohlsson does all of that and more, not to mention he takes some great tempos and is crystal clear.

How does his Busoni concerto sound?

I compared it to Brendel, and I must say that I like Brendel much more than Ohlsson. I find Ohlsson's tone quite flat, while I find Brendel's tone beautiful, so brilliant and (lol) passionate. That is what I miss in Ohlsson's recording, love for the pieces.

I'm not set up to listen to the files, but I love his playing!  I'm so glad you brought up his name.  I don't know if I've even heard him play Beethoven, but I have heard him play many different styles in concert, and it's always REALLY beautiful, really classy playing.

That recording of Apassionata, 1st movement was some of the best piano I've ever heard, technically and stylistically.  I could listen to it all day and night.  He has such a fluid touch; the notes flow like water through my head.

Well, I have not heard lots and lots of pianists play the Beethoven sonatas, but by far my favorites have to be Bishop and Barenboim (I prefer Barenboim actually)

For my personal taste, Barenboim sounds much to classical for Beethoven.

I really like Barenboim's WTC work for Bach.

So much so I would love to get a CD of him playing the Sonata's.

Do you know which one would be the best

I have to agree, Ohlsson is fabulous.

I've mentioned this before, but I'm a great fan of Robert Silverman's Beethoven's Sonatas also. If you get a chance to listen to his 10 CD boxed set, it is not only brilliantly performed but meticulously recorded as well.

Check out his web page - https://www.robert-silverman.com/
