Puzzles!!!
on: August 12, 2006, 10:32:57 AM
I usually enjoy doing these type of things(hey, I'm a kid). Got any nice puzzles to share?

Heres are a few that are very familiar:

1.You were driving a bus along the street. There were 5 people in it (not including you). At the first stop, 6 people got in while 3 got off. On the next stop, 9 people got in while 7 got off. Then, 1 person got in while 6 got off. Another 7 got in while 11 got off. The bus became too heavy to move(cheap bus). So, 1 person got off. After confusing you with the numbers I ask you this question:

What was the name of the bus driver? ;D

2.You were in a bus with an old lady and the bus driver. You soon dozed off. When you woke up, no one else was on the bus except for you. But the bus was still moving(ARGGGGHHHH!!!!).

Whats going on? (The bus was NOT rolling off a cliff) 8)

Good luck with the answers!

So Bernard is pushing the bus? But why does the bus get too heavy when there is only one left? At some point there are 10 in the bus and Bernard keeps pushing, he is driving the bus along the street without being inside. So how does he do it? And why does he have to stop later. That's the real puzzle.

the bus has no gas.  there is no bus.  the bus is the kind that has doors on both sides - and noone really knows who has actually gone in and out.  some of the people have claimed to be angels.  some are devils.  the bus driver is a devil.  the old woman represents wisdom.  it is better to be the last one off the bus than the first one on.

ok it did cross my mind that the bus driver and the old woman were eating at the diner across the street.

You need a weight of 4 kg.

The materials you have available are:
a 5 litre container,
a 3 litre container,
a garden hose with unlimited supply of water.

When filled to the brim with water the 5 liter container will weigh 5 kg, similarly the 3 litre container will weigh 3 kg.

You must construct the weight of 4 kg using only the materials stated above.  What are the steps you need to do this?  No guestimating allowed, the weight must be precise and your solution must show evidence of that.

1. Fill up the 5l container to the brim (= 5kg).
2. Transfer the water in the 5l container to the 3l container.  You will be left with 2l (2kg) on the 5l container and 3l (3 kg) on the 3 l container.
3. Empty the 3l container.
4. Transfer the 2l (2kg) from the 5l container to the 3l container. Now you have an empty 5l container and a 3l container with exactly 2 kg (= 2l)
5. Fill the 5l container to the brim again (= 5kg).
6. Pour water from the 5l container onto the 3l container (which already contains 2l) to the brim.
7. You will be left with 4l (4kg) on the 5l container.

 8)

Best wishes,
Bernhard.

Alternatively,

1.  Fill the 3 liter container to the brim
2.  Transfer the contents iof the 3 liter container to the empty 5 liter container
3.  Fill the 3 liter container to the brim again
4.  Pour from the 3 liter into the 5 liter until the 5 liter is full.  (Now the 3 liter container has exactly 1 liter of water in it)
5.  Empty the 5 liter container

6.  Fill the 3 liter container to the brim

brilliant.  no wonder you go around listening to sound samples for mistakes (just kidding).  seriously, i thought you were solving the bus problem and had a moment there that was trying to see the solution.  a connection of sorts.

it has been said that 'eureka' moments often happen in a totally out of context situation.  it's like the subconcious takes over and smack in the middle of taking a look out the window - the solution arrives.  for me, this has never happened.  usually it's in the middle of the night and i wake up and am just realizing i know the answer to a question.  it has to be a quiet situation. absolutely no noise.

how do i know about eurekas?  well, because i ask a lot of why questions.  this is the first step of many.  once you know the answer - it is difficult not to ask why again.  then you are faced witha  dillema.  either your answer is right or wrong.  then, you have to wait until the next day to try it out.  being that testing things usually makes a certain amount of noise or experimental procdure that requires light.  unless you do a lot of darkroom experiments.

John and Marie were found dead in a room.  There was no blood, no bruises and no signs of foul play.  The two were perfectly healthy prior to their deaths.

When the investigators searched the room they knew that:

-there was no way that the two ran out of oxygen
-the ground was wet
-there was shattered glass on the ground
-this wasn't a freak accident, and I'm sure it happens all the time

....so how did John and Marie die?

1.

If you had only one match and you entered a room in which there was a kerosene lamp, an oil heater, and a wood-burning stove, which would you light first.

2.

You have 2 coins in your hands equaling 55 cents. One of them is not a nickel. What are the coins?

3.

If you went to bed at 8 o'clock at night and wound your alarm clock to go off at 9:00 the next morning, how much sleep would you get?

4.

A farmer has 17 sheep. All but 9 die. How many sheep are left?

5.

Why can't a man living in North Carolina be buried in South Carolina?

Enjoy!

Ill give you the answer to that one

Its 1:45. The man gave away a total of 25 cents. He divided it between two people. Therefore, he gave a quarter to two  :o

In an oblique kind of way, that brings to my twisted composerly mind the remark made by Erik Satie about the first movement of Debussy's La Mer (the title of which, as you doubtless know, suggests the depiction of the sea from daybreak to mid-day) which was that he particularly liked the bit at around a quarter to eleven...

i'm also sure it wasn't a freak accident.  there's some show here where a lady mortician shows her techniques for figuring out how people died.  she immediately clips their fingernails and their hair and does a blood panel.  ruling out any foul play - people do themselves in routinely by electrocuting themselves, having diabetic shock, dying of a heart attack, falling off a ladder, eating something that went bad, taking too many meds together, drinking, not paying attention while driving, many things.

what i don't understand is when they call a construction worker's death a 'freak accident.'  i mean, it's like calling a coal miners death a 'freak accident.'  anytime there's digging and building, there's accidents.  safety precautions can't hurt though.

say, freiderick kuhlau   was blinded in one eye in a freak accident.

Some of my alternate answers:

3. None - you never went to bed.

4. 17 - There was no mention of burrying the dead sheep.  The farmer still has 17 (both dead or alive).

3. (alternate: you could also be a spectator who wanted to join in the middle of the race, in which case you would be second last)

this is like watching people at a pet store.  everyone has a reason for going in , but they forget it as soon as they step inside.  same for circuses.  and, basically anywhere that kids run free.  do you want to lose your mind.  go bowling.  try to be logical there.  or the hair salon.

some places do not allow critical thinking.  i am proud of my grandmother because she turned her bathroom into a critical thinking room.  that is why i am so smart today.

Go to a shop that sells 4kg weights and say "I will give you these containers and an unlimited supply of water in exchange for a 4kg weight"

1.Mary's father has 5 daughters. Nana, Nene, Nini, Nono, and ........who?

Mary.

Quote
2.You are in a race. You overtake the second person. What position are you in?

2nd.

Quote
3.You are in a race. You overtake the last person. What position are you in?

1st. edit later :- Or perhaps not, I assumed you'd lapped the last person, but you aren't necessarily in a particular place if you do that. It must be a different trick, erm...oh yeah, the "last person" you overtake would put you in first place because there are no more to overtake...so it's still 1st...

Bonus question!!!

4.A dumb person walks into a shop and wants a glass of water. He uses his hand to make signs to show what he wants. What does a blind person do to show that he wants to buy a pair of sunglasses?

Asks for a pair of sunglasses.

Haha quantum fell right in the trap  ;D

:-X Ok well after further reading

Question 1 has a possible loophole.  It only states the father has 5 daughters, there is no mention about how many sons (if any) he has.  "Nana, Nene, Nini, Nono" have no direct reference to being all daughters, only an implication of subject from the previous sentence.   A little tweaking of the structure may be helpful:
"Mary's father has 5 children.  The childrens names are: Nana, Nene, Nini, Nono, and ....who?"

So what's the answer to the bonus?

Answer to John and Mary's mysterious death...

They are goldfish, and the bowl fell over and broke.  Thus, the shattered glass, the water, and they died because they couldn't breathe (even though there was plenty of oxyen).
When you earnestly believe you can compensate for a lack of skill by doubling your efforts, there's no end to what you can't do.

In the popular game of Minesweeper, the object is to find all the mines. If you click on a square it shows a number from 0 to 8 indicating how many of the adjacent squares contain mines. If you click on a mine, you lose.

Can you figure out where the mines are in the below board? Blank squares indicate that it is unknown whether there is a mine in that space. Squares with numbers contain no mines (or you would have already lost).

Professor Bill was doing ear training exercises in his music class.  He sat on the piano bench and started to play a sequence that started with a single note in the bass.  He played the first note of the sequence and got a funny sound because the piano's hammers have hardened due to years of use.  Bill stoped and decided to start the passage again.  But before he did Sarah (who has perfect pitch) said "was that an F#?"  Bob, in the front row said "nah, that was a G."  Victoria who was on the right side of the class said "it sounded like an interval of C with and E three octaves and a third above".  Keith said "it sounds like a B flat that's kinda flat." Janet disagreed and said "I think it is was D, kinda high but there are some other highish sounds I can't recognize".

The Professor said "you are all correct".  What note did he play?

Bonus:
What finger did Bob use to play the note?

quantum...that mine exercise.  is that sort of like 'battleship?'  if there are more than one or two spaces, there is a mine?  i stepped on all the single boxes and hopped over the big ones.

now that adam and eve question of cd nedra's.  immediately i thought she was going for the apple hor'dourves and was offerring adam an apple yet again.  eddie wasn't sure until he saw adam eat the apple, yet again.  he was immediately portalled down.  eve started looking around for the snake to blame.  but, there was none.  so she blamed it on God.  then, she went down.  but somehow, in God's graces - they sort of hovered in mid-heaven for awhile blissfully together.  they came to an agreement that if God didn't say not to touch the hors'dourves then it was just a joke He was playing.  when they figured it out they both sighed a sigh of relief and wafted back up.

that last one has me stumped.  the professor saying 'you are all correct' makes me think of a teacher i once had that carried a supposed 'cup of coffee.'  i think it was whiskey.  the note that the teacher played?  hmm.  and what finger?  is this a dirty joke?  i won't participate in those.
