So-called celebrities
on: August 23, 2006, 02:46:56 AM
Does anyone besides me get sick of the so-called celebrities foisted on us by pop-culture?  The Hilton women, American "idols", silly dressed sports stars, tv personalities, etc. Give me a break!

I hear paris hilton made it into the guiness book of world records as the "worlds most overrated celebrity."

Seriously, these celebrities aren't famous for the quality of their songs. They are famous because of their outlooks and the sponsors that fund them. The general public think of them as auspicious and "hot", and so spend a ton of money on their music. Such demotic actions are very popular amongst teenagers who will go to all extent to buy a product in their everlasting pursuit of "cool". Not so good for the celebrities of "pop" stars, is the desultory nature of teens. They like one and a few days later they like the other. Why? Because the "art" of celebrities has no quality. It is empty, which is why they are so ephemeral in appeal.

Celebrities are like, totally cool. I totally want to be like Paris Hilton when I grow up. She's like, so pretty, and wears, like, totally hot clothes.

It worries me what the modern generation look at as idols.

In England we have an emaciated stick insect that can't sing and a past his sell by date illiterate footballer, that appear to worshipped by thousands.

Maybe i am just getting old.

yep.  in my city's newspaper, they said that Tom Cruise is useless as a leading man now, because people cant get past the image of him jumping on a couch like a giddy school girl, or shooting his mouth off inappropriately

Read my comment about him in the movie topic. Actually, when I see him in a movie I automatically think about Xenu blowing up a volano with thermonuclear weapons and eating placenta's. Not good for the movie.

What I don't understand, though, is why if everyone hates these people so much why are they so friggin' rich?  Why are they so famous, everyone knows that they are talentless (I am surprised no one has mentioned Miss Lohan up till now so I will)?  I mean really, who is buying their crap?

Maybe it's all a consiracy where the massive conglomerates are just paying these people to appear like they're famous until they actually become famous?  Hmmm.... That would explain Miss Hilton and the "famous because she's famous" Status that she has going on.

Paris Hilton is a walking STD. These people are only famous because they are involved in a large amount of money. Paris is about to inherit a zillion dollars from her daddy, as is Nicole Richie, so basically magazines lap up the photos of them shopping in expensive shops because basically we're jealous!! and then we try and find faults in them to make us feel better. They can't do anything constructive or that contributes to society in any way.

Believe it. :) It's incredible how stupid people can be. I remember once reading somewhere that Chritstina Aguilera asked where the Cannes Film Festival was being held that year... Although no one could accuse her of being talentless. A bit thick, maybe, but not talentless.

Paris Hilton is a ridiculous arse. She's never had to have any touch with reality at all. She literally lives in her own little fantasy world where money and hard work don't exist.

But I think my most hated "celebrity" is Victoria Beckham. She looks awful. Some people inexplicably think she looks great, but if it weren't for her fake tan, fake hair and fake nails she'd look seriously ill. She's an icon for anorexic girls. It's probably a good thing she hasn't any daughters. David may be your typical pretty-but-dim footballer, but he's a much better role model than she is.

Having said all that, it drives me up the wall that people aspire to be like celebrities at all. I read recently that a huge portion of teenaged girls want nothing more than to be a footballer's wife. How sad. Grow a brain, you idiots.

Nah.. with the way the world's set up, all women have to do is marry someone like that.  (My plan's a doctor. jk)  I mean really, society does seem to have a problem with a career woman, so most women find it easier to just accept their lot and become a house-wife of some rich dude.  For most women, that seems far more attractive than actually doing something.

Feminists want to feel oppressed and so they try to make everything look like they are.  I find feminism mostly a faked or ridiculous movement.  I blame the idiots who want to "liberate" women.

oh dont even get me started on feminists.  My university english prof was a vicious feminist.  We had this assignment to write an informal essay about dreams and goals, etc.

I knew this girl in the class who wrote an essay about how she wants to be a stay-at-home mom and raise a family.  She gets the essay back from the prof: sections are crossed off in red ink and in block capitals in the margins reads, 'THAT'S NO GOAL.'  the poor girl failed the assignment.  who does this prof think she is to tell people what their goals are?  b*tch

We have to understand that men and women feel and think differently. It is a fact that women are more nurturing, hence their desire to stay at home and "attend to the house", whether that means doing nothing or actually attending to the house. The teenagers and other women in general who want only to marry a rich fellow and attend to the house will not attend to the house, as the maids will do that. She will just sit on her ass and screw around with him (quite literally if you know what I mean.) and then leave him. Then the next one: Etc, etc. This is partly the society's fault, femenists aside. Society doesn't push a woman to attend to the house. Is it possible to find a girl in any house that actually does anything but sit on her (profanity) all day and watch television? Of course all they would want to do is marry a guy and do zilch. If a guy sits around at home, it is not up to him if he wants to do nothing around his wife's house, because he isn't going to get one, most likely. In case of feminine entities of human nature, their nature allows them to get away with not working, not studying and sitting around doing nothing. I have the evidence to support this with via my sister's case, not just a hypothesised conjecture. My sister sits around at home, and plays the computer games (online) all day strainght. That's during the vacations/holidays/weekends. During school she doesn't really focus on the studies although passes, thank god. My parents are of course upset because of this, and somewhat try to push her, but all in vain. She can't concentrate on anything and gets bored, even of games, after 5 seconds. Don't get me wrong, my parents are very pro education(of course), but in my sister's case, they already probably assume that she will keep on doing nothing despite the scoldings. She literally hasn't changed in her manners and still does absolutely nothing. What are the feminists going to say now? Push the child in vain? It's literally impossible if she's not interested in anything but wasting time on line.

By the way, congratulations to anyone who can guess the name of the online game she is (literally) addicted to.

some game where you draw associations?  literally draw them?  my eleven year old daughter really likes that game.  it's an online game and quite interactive.  i think that i don't supervise her enough anymore - but like your sister - she gets all her homework done and is getting straight A's in school.

i keep threatening to give her piano lessons.  but, i think she wants voice or art lessons.  mostly art lessons.  perhaps this year.  there is an artist around the block from us.

what i've learned as a parent is that it is 24 hour a day work.  sometimes i just get tired and want to sleep or chill.  that is the only reason for watching tv or going online.  i do work really hard.  i keep the entire outside and inside of the house and it takes all day.  some people may say - why does it take all day.  i don't know.  it just does.

of course being a "stay at home mom" isn't a goal. I'd have failed her too  ;D

If being a housewife (lets not mince words here) is such a worthy and challenging pursuit how come plenty of women raise kids, do the domestic stuff AND have a career outside the home?

And what's this poor aspiring housewife going to do once the kids are grown up? She's going to realise she's wasted her life. Or is she going to spend the rest of her days cleaning the floor with a toothbrush and waiting on hubby? Now that's a goal every girl should aspire to.

Why should women be defined by their ovaries?  We are actually a bit more than just an attractive packing for a womb.

You can be a "mom" and have a life as well, you know! Having kids is something you do along the way ... it's not an end in itself nor should it be.

EDIT: pianistimo I am  not having a go at you. I know you stay home to look after your kids but I acknowledge you are a pianist.

Failed her for trying to stay at home and attend the house? Who is going to take care of the house then, a fairy? The position of women looking after a house has been since the beginning of humanity. Men would go hunt, women would cook, look after children, etc. The student of course didn't mean that she would lock herself up and do just that all the time. Do men endlessly work? No. They take breaks. So do women. If that student wants to do that, then she may. If she doesn't like it, she could go and study whilst the husband brings in food. Ada, you believe that women should actively pursue their right to a career. No one argues with you. If a woman wants to, she may. However given the current circumstances of men doing the majority of "working", it is more plausible for a woman to be entitled to house chores. This is a matter of personality however so this "issue" is endless.

uuh...

*scratches head*

I know! Maybe the man can do half, and the woman can do half!

Seriously debussy, I can't believe that anyone still believes in these weird notions of men go out hunting while women sweep the cave. I don't know what your parents have been teaching you.

In my household we both work outside the home, so we both share the housework. And we pay a cleaner to come in and give the house a good once over every week.

It's simply a no brainer.

Hunting is illegal in UK now (for both men and women) and I daresay that, given the prices of most things over here, most men and women are too busy trying to juggle their mortgages on the cave to have time to sweep it.

One cannot, of course, believe anything much that one reads in a newspaper, but the headline in our local one here a couple of days ago was that the minimum salary to qualify for a mortgage on an averagely priced house in the city of Bath is £66,000 p.a.; try a slightly above average home and watch that annual salary requirement run past six figures fast enough to suggest that it's trying to secure some kind of Olympic record. The guy who runs - and lives over - the newspaper shop where I saw this was moaning about the fact that he makes almost half of that amount per month and can still barely manage to pay his mortgage. It's SUCH fun being over here, you know!

And in such an environment, some people can still somehow manage to find it in their hearts to complain that these dastardly composers and publishers are making some money when they should really be letting everyone have all their stuff free of charge at their own expense! This applies to women composers and publishers as well as men, by the way. If anyone wants to get completely away from what you quite rightly point out is the antediluvian and outdated hunter-gatherer rubbish, then just spare a few minutes to consider what it's like for us - men and women alike!

Whinge (not really!) over...

Nonsense woman
You mean the man can clean the introduction and cook the exposition and the woman can launder the development and iron the recapitulation? That's not a no-brainer. It might be a non-starter (or non-s'nata).

Anyway, Thalbergsane, we know that, for you, by your own admission, women are, at best, useful slaves (phew! - that was a lot of commas!); as a matter of interest, do you by chance plan on bringing any of your servile female entourage to Jonathan Powell's 11 November recital as a (highly dubious) reward for their loyal and consistent labours?

And we pay a cleaner to come in and give the house a good once over every week.
watch out!  my ma had her wedding ring stolen that way.

Seriously debussy, I can't believe that anyone still believes in these weird notions of men go out hunting while women sweep the cave. I don't know what your parents have been teaching you.

In my household we both work outside the home, so we both share the housework.
well, that wouldnt work, because typically, women are crazy anal with the cleaning and the man's cleaning job simply wouldnt suffice.  what man other than Danny Tanner is going to fluff the pillows and sweep the driveway?  You see, guys will come up with ideas like peeing in the sink or the shower to avoid having to clean the toilet.  after a few weeks of this, I think the woman would insist on doing the cleaning herself.  and then were back at square one.

haha not all of us buddy  ;) too much time is wasted on housework and if you're busy you learn how to streamline.

Ironing, for example. what? I have heard of people who iron tea towells and undies.  :o  :o

My son first set eyes on an ironing board at the age of 7, and had to ask what it was.

my iron has been used for too many iron-on transfers.  it sticks to everything.  and, occasionally leaves marks.  so, i have to use it sparingly and on the hottest setting.  it works better that way.  i use it once a year - to act busy.  say, if my husband is going on a business trip - i'll iron his clothes so that his buddies think that he lives like this.

of course being a "stay at home mom" isn't a goal. I'd have failed her too  ;D

If being a housewife (lets not mince words here) is such a worthy and challenging pursuit how come plenty of women raise kids, do the domestic stuff AND have a career outside the home?

more money isn't needed because of the money saved.  we don't have a housekeeper.  granted, sometimes the current one gets lazy - but that only varies from week to week.  usually, the basics are covered.  the bills are paid.  the grass is mowed.  the children are fed.  the laundry is done.  yes, kohl's charge is higher than it should be - but that was because of school clothes.  really, i save money right and left.

next week, it's painting the basement with a clear seal coat that doesn't allow moisture seepage (around the entire concrete exposed section on the outside of the house).  if i paid someone - it would probably be $1500 to $2000.  i don't care.  i do things slowly - but they get done. and, then starting on the basement refinishing.  painting the inside.

i've found the more money you make - the more you spend.  if you are forced to save - you do save.  and - you can save extra by being home when things happen.  but, i'm not saying that everyone has to live according to my 'rules.'  agreed about not being lazy.  i think the issue is that women who stay at home are lazy.  i don't know any on my block that are lazy.  if they have extra time they're volunteering at the school or doing some kind of home business that brings in extra cash.  people stay home so they don't have to pay babysitting - which is astronomical these days, too.

Because more money is needed ?

It 's not about money.

It's about doing something useful with one's life. It's about doing something with your training, talents and strengths rather than turning into a domestic drudge.

If you are qualified to be a doctor, a scientist, an artist, a writer, a musician, the secretary general of the United Nations for christ's sake, why on earth would you choose to give that away to be a housewife?

Imagine if Bach had given up his career to look after the kiddies and iron underpants ?

Imagine if he had aspired to be a "stay at home dad" instead of spending his life doing what he loved and he was good at?

If a man wouldn't do it, why is it expected of a woman?

Useful for whom ?

Not everyone is qualified for that. Actually a very tiny minority.

I would do it if any woman would be my wife, earn the money in necessary quantity and not call me a loser for not having a job.
