Do you hate any piece?
on: September 23, 2006, 10:40:52 AM
Just wondering, is there any piece that had left a negative reaction in you the first time you heard it?

I don't really listen to Schubert much, so I'm not sure.

By the way, does your repetoire ever change? Your signature has remained the same since the day I joined as a member. :o

The 5th movt of the Turangalila Symphony I find quite annoying (although it's catchy) and Vingt regards I can't sit through.
Liszt Fantasy and Fugue on Bach I'm not a huge fan of.
Stockhausen - pretty much his entire output.
'Einstein on the Beach' left me with a hideuos impression.
I'm sure there's more...

I heard a Liszt piece on the radio one day, I was impressed for the first minute and from there it became obnoxious and I wanted to change the station.

I Drink Alone by George Thorougood is annoyingly redundant.

I hate those pie pieces that are only 2 mm wide... What a waste of energy ;).

On topic, I dislike a lot of music but I live through it.  Like Messiaen, Crumb, et al.

And Mozart.
And anyone from this period.

False.  Have you never heard Beethoven?  Or good Mozart for that matter... or Haydn.  :-[ *Weeps for his fallen comrade*

@cmg, have you heard Lyapunov's Lesghinka?  It's a technical tour-de-force which has some musical meaning, fury, and some interesting oriental flavor.  You should check it out, since you don't like Islamey.  Lezghinka (variable spelling) is "imitative" of Islamey, however.

lol a music critic once describes Turangalila in his 20th century music book as "orgasmic" - and i'm sure he's not the only one to say so...

I personally find Steve Reich's works very annoying, especially in the beginning where the same phrase is repeated over and over again before any variation in sound occurs - I mean, how many times do you need to hear someone say "come out to show them"??? {bangs head}

my vote would have to go for any piece by Erik Satie. i think he is the biggest time waster in the history of classical music.
In particular i despise his Gymnopédies (too much self-indulgent plodding sentiment) which have all the musical invention of a bag of potatoes.

Hate ? No, I don't think so, it's too strong a word. I might hate something I found uninteresting if I were forced to play it or listen to it. Plenty of music goes in one ear and out the other but I just leave it alone and involve myself only with music I enjoy. If a piece doesn't interest me I simply don't bother with it but I don't hate it.

I find Haydn to be extremely obnoxious. I used to hate Schönberg and Webern as well, but lately i've just been completely obsessed with the Webern String quartets... I can't say that i like any Saint-Saëns either.

I can't say I hate anything. If I don't come back to something quite often is not because I hate it but I fail to understand it. I used "hate" Schoenberg, but now I realise that I just couldn't understand his language. Now the more I listen to his works, the more I understand. I must however admit that much of post Schoenberg, Webern, Berg era music is way way way way way WAY beyond my intellectual grasp.

When I listen to Rach 3 I get the message: Lets cram every possible note that we can and still make the piece physically playable and tonal.

Now, nail me on the cross next to counterpoint.

Me thinks there is a slight double standard among pianist. Its okay to hate Bach, and Mozart, but its just plain wierd to not like Liszt and Rachmaninoff.

I thought that the idea was, instead, to see how many contrapuntal lines and dramatic and thematic development we can put together into a cohesive whole that is tonal, beautiful, and powerful.

However, I think the only fair criticisms that can be made are that the piano is of a pronounced bravura type, the orchestra merely accompanies, and it trails on at times.

It's not OK to not like Bach.  Mozart is not "OK" either but he gets the hate.

Liszt is absolutely hated in Europe.  If you play Liszt in Europe you get kicked out.  That's Liszt Hate.  Therefore, it's not OK to hate Liszt.  See?  :-X

Wait.. I find this hard to believe. If I play a TE in a recital should I expect to be told "Now look here son, we dont allow that kind of rubbish here, take it back to America"?, Should I expect to have my passport revoked?

Especially since many of these here other pianostreet forumers are European and love Liszt.

And yes, it is ok to hate Liszt, its even okay to hate Beethoven, Mozart, Rachmaninoff, Shostakovich etc... As long as you respect them as a influential force.
