Dear Marik,
I am afraid you are the one with "lack of manners".
I don't know what you're talking about when you're saying:
...calling present people as a third party...
I did not learn everything, but I certainly did a lot.
It is clear to me that you can learn a lot from me, others, your level and better, did.
Good luck with your concert career.
Best,
Rami

Actually, if you are as good as you say, I really don't like your personality, and wouldn't like you to be my teacher. Sorry to be honest.

FWIW, I also have "musicians and reviewers all over the world", including big and VERY big names. I also played in many places, including Muzeon Tel-Aviv, Mishkenot Sh'Ananim, Geyhal Ha'tarbut, Concertgebouw, Grand Hall of Moscow Conservatory, etc., so what? In my close to 500 posts that's the first time I mention it, for the same reason.
Damn PM me your real name I really want to see a recital of yours :O

I had a chance to visit U Tube (or whatever) and watch Mr. Bar Remi play the Gershwin Rhapsody in Blue.

Brilliant performance.  Very charming man.  Great opportunity if you have the $$$ to afford it.

Give this gentleman a chance, please.

I'd suggest you to take some serious books/researches on the topic, open some scores, esp. operatic, symphonic, quartets, etc., then read, think, listen, i.e. educate yourself. After that we can resume.
Thanks for your suggestion Marik, but I did all that before you were learning where middle C was. And no, thanks, I am not interested to resume anything further with you.
...your constant referral to some anonimous "musicians and reviewers all over the world" and "hundreds of concert" frankly, becomes quite annoying.
I am so sorry to annoy you, it was not my intention.

I uh, tried to do Google search - maybe for the very first time? Because I um, had trouble locating these reviews on the internet :-[ all I could find = garageband bio...same re: "big names". Can you help?

Did you actually check all 557 entries and did not find reviews, check again, maybe you'll find even a NYTimes one.
I'll admit though that there are not many on Google, you see, I've been in the business more than 45 years and Google has been around for what, the last 10 years....

Mr Bar-Niv, I am very curious as to why you are not in the Steinway Artists roster list. It may not be the definitive list of professional pianists...
It certainly isn't, many great artists were not on that roster.

I actually liked your Mozart sonata. Your interpretation of the chopin polonaise however, i very much didnt care for. You are so careful and delicate everywhere, you are almost playing it like a nocturne. Where is the excitement, the thrill?

Quote
Chopin composed this polonaise as the dream of a powerful, victorious and prosperous Poland.

Here is an artist who truly has captured the spirit of this polonaise

But, i wont judge. You have been in the proffesion so long, you obviously have worked out your own way of doing things. And i agree with much of what you said about Mozart and i think you have a good grasp on his style in general. I wish you luck with your future masterclasses.

Thanks, Nicco, for the good words re my Mozart.
About my Chopin Polonaise, I thought I conveyed excitement, thrill, etc. and most people would say that it is very powerful.
I've heard before this Polonaise interpretation of Berman and listen to it again now.
It is not my cup of tea and I do like him in many other things, we were friends too.
So I guess it is a matter of taste.
Thanks again,
Rami

Thanks for the link to Berman playing the Chopin Polonaise!

I agree that he has got the energy, vivacity and passion but he lacks the lyricism required in certain passages and harmonic progressions where he seems to plough through with little thought. His phrases are frequently not very well defined and the pedalling is occasionally clumsy. There are too many technical errors for my liking.

I loved his recording of Liszt's Annees de Pelerinage though!

The other thing I would like to mention is that as musicians, we should always respect fellow musician colleagues. There is no need for personal insults or derogatory remarks.

Arthur Friedheim was one of the first people to play Liszt's piano sonata, and he was the second person to play it in Vienna after von Buelow.  He got rave reviews, even though von Buelow had been panned in a previous year; Liszt thought it was because people were beginning to accept his music.  Friedheim asked, "But couldn't it be because I played it better?"  to which Liszt replied, "You certainly leave modesty to those who consider it a virtue."

If you have been in the 'business' (concertising + teaching?) for more than 45 years, and let's say you start at the age of 15 (approx.) then you must be at least 60 years old. WOW!!! You look like you're in your 40s in those youtube videos! Long live Bar-Niv! ;D

That said, I think many have raised valid points here re: mature pianism (if I may). Quite interesting reading. And to me, certainly Mr Bar-Niv is a seasoned concert pianist - how good depends on your opinion and/or who you hear.

However, I do remember Mr Bar-Niv's first reaction to my (and well, pretty much anyone else's that are similar) not-so-positive comment; "Can you do better?"

Sorry if this reignites anything. I simply find this interesting in that most/all pianists I know/have met, would ask, "why do you think that?" I know of an excellent Beethoven player who, at the end of a Beethoven sonata performance, was confronted with the comment, "I like your 2nd, 3rd, and 4th movt." His next question was, "what happened in the 1st movt?" NOT "can you play the 1st movt. better?"

At least, I'd think that finding out why a certain audience member thinks a certain way is quite a logical task...unless...

8) 8) 8) I guess that we have the best pianist here
 :P

...then obviously there is no place for negative comments. So...

...all hail for the arrival upon the concert stage: [Mr Bar-Niv]!

[Ah, what did I just say? Manners, manners...! ><]

ps. your ideas on the Appassionata are very good! Have you performed and/or recorded this?

Yes, agreed. Your attitude was wrong from day one.  ::)

What was wrong in telling members about my concerts and piano camp?
It went over very nicely in other forums/lists/egroups. No place else was I attacked like here.

Why should anyone be intimidated here. We are all friends.  :-*

I guess that's the intimidating part, all you friends gang up on someone who dares not to mold into what you'd like them to be here. First I learned of Bernhard, now I hear of Ibty, etc.
Best,
Rami

I believe you must have been very lucky.

What have you learned of Bernhard ?

Ibty was as arrogant as you when he first came here.
He has changed. Can you?

I've kept quiet for some time, and sat back and observed. Speaking as an adult who attends, from time to time, piano camp/summer school, and therefore presumably the sort of person that Mr. Bar-Niv is seeking to attract, I think I'd now like to say why I wouldn't go to his piano camp.

1) Geographical reasons.
2) More pertinently: Mr Bar-Niv seems to come with a considerable amount of "attitude". I appreciate that it can be unfair to judge someone's persona from what they say on an internet forum. Equally, I understand that he's attempting to promote himself.
There's no doubting that Mr. Bar-Niv is a perfectly respectable pianist, and may well be a decent pedagogue also, but I'm sorry; I'd prefer someone with a little more humility and a touch less condescension.

I think we've all been trying to tell him that. But to no avail.  ::)

Piano Street Magazine:
Poems of Ecstasy – Scriabin’s Complete Piano Works Now on Piano Street

The great early 20th-century composer Alexander Scriabin left us 74 published opuses, and several unpublished manuscripts, mainly from his teenage years – when he would never go to bed without first putting a copy of Chopin’s music under his pillow. All of these scores (220 pieces in total) can now be found on Piano Street’s Scriabin page. Read more
