This is a bit of a late notice for those of you in the area, but Australian composer Carl Vine's Piano Sonata No. 3 (2007) will be premiered tomorrow at the Colburn School for the Performing Arts in Los Angeles. As a student there, I've known for a while, so its kind of a shame that I post this so late. Here is the program:

Pianist Elizabeth SCHUMANN: A Carl VINE Premiere

5/11/2007 7:30pm

Zipper Hall • FREE ADMISSION

BEETHOVEN
Sonata Quasi Una Fantasia in E flat Major, Opus 27 no. 1
I. Andante - Allegro
II. Allegro molto e vivace
III. Adagio con espressione
IV. Allegro vivace

Carl VINE
Third Sonata (composed in 2007, World Premiere)
I. Fantasia
II. Rondo
III. Variations
IV. Presto
(Piano Sonata No 3 was commissioned by the Gilmore International Keyboard Festival and the Colburn School with assistance from the Australia Council. Elizabeth Schumann is the recipient of the 2004 Gilmore Young Artist Award.)

Intermission

CHOPIN
Impromptu No. 1 in A flat Major, opus 29
Impromptu No. 2 in F sharp Major, opus 36
Impromptu No. 3 in G flat Major, opus 51

SCHUBERT-LISZT Song Transcriptions:
Aufenthalt, D. 957, No. 5
Gretchen am Spinnrade, D. 118
Standchen von Shakespeare, D. 957, No. 4

I hope that I'm not the only one going here, heh. I'll be sure to say how it was if any of you are interested in knowing.

I just got back from the concert. Vine's 3rd sonata was great! It's a shame that there wasn't a bigger turnout for the concert, for it was a really great program.

I wish I could've gone!  Jeanne is a friend of mine, but I had finals this week...  :'(

I'm sure she was amazing as usual!

To tell the truth, I found her playing a bit dry at times, and she didn't have as much "umph" as I had hoped for, especially in the premiere. She definitely had a feeling for the Beethoven and Schubert-Liszt though and did a decent job with those.

Never look at the trombones. You'll only encourage them.

Yeah, I am still a bit shocked by that. He had an Australian work premiered in America, and where I study? What are the chances...

Why are you shocked?  He wrote the sonata for an American keyboard festival...

I say the same thing about American musical culture.

At least you have 4 or 5 renowned orchestras and draw famous performers - New York always has stuff happening does it not.
We have SSO with the odd conductor coming down.

It seems to me that the people there are hungrier for this type of culture than the people here. Classical music seems to be dying in Los Angeles. It's just my opinion, though.

So perhaps a positive correllation between diminished classical music culture and augmented... um...  :P

Haha, good one. I've known far too many people with both traits to their name.
