Kurt Cobain
on: April 07, 2004, 04:24:51 AM
its 10 years after his tragic death, and i wonder, what do you piano dudes think of him and his music?

i think he was a cool guy, who made cool music..  ;D

i wonder who thinks he was a genius?

i think he was a great songwriter - a genius lyricist.

but was he a musical genius?

I wouldn't say he was a genius but he definitely was a great musician and lyricist... it's one of the few non-classical or jazz stuff I sometimes listen to.

a general statement about Cobain- He ruined music, theres nothing genius about three chords, even the lyrics arnt that impressive

is that your opinion?
:o

its not the three chords he used, its how he used them, the riffs are just the underpinning to the songs anyway - the real genius is the melody

i believe he was a greatly gifted melodist

ok , so he didnt go into erudite music, but i wonder, if he did and was brought up with erudite music, would his gift have took him to the top of that musical world too?

another thing - dave grohl is a kick ass drummer, his drum tracks are perfect, the fills and drum riffs can stand by themselves, and he always complimented the songs in the best way.

im not the biggest nirvana fan, but i recognise their greatness and importance, and i feel this is an interesting and important topic to discuss with any musical people.

Had only a few good hits, as most bands do.

Well...his value is questionable, but I think Eminem says it best:

I like the colour Red

Kurt wasn't really anything in my opinion.  He made good music, but it wasn't amazing, i can't listen to the CD more than twice in a row without getting sick of it.  His chord progressions and solos were easy and perhaps unimaginative.  On the other hand he was one of the people who opened up the world of grunge and made it possible to develop it into the many styles of today.  His melodies are also interesting though i wouldn't have said genious.  And on a side note while dave grohl is an amazing drummer he wasn't so good back in nirvana.  Listen to his drumming on the new queens of the stone age CD its amazing.
