I got a 1911 Steinway T upright piano a few months ago.

I sold it for a nice profit and got a 1990's restored 1879 Bechstein B at half the price of the Steinway.

That's what I call a win-win-win situation (yes, 3 x win).

I thought I had responded to this post back in 2004, but it must have been on a similar thread.  Anyway, I play a 1984 polished black Baldwin Model L Artist Grand (six feet, three inches).  I did a partial rebuilding in 2007.

I'm new here... and delighted I found this site!  You ask... what I have around here.  A Steinway A, built in 1898, which is played daily; a Steinway B, 1931, which is played rarely but kept tuned, and a Steinway Upright Grand, circa 1890, which is also played rarely but kept tuned...

Yamaha U3 - it is my pride and joy. It was bought as a refurbished instrument, so it's about 15/20 years old but feels like it was made just for me. My dad hates it because it's an enormous, shiny black box and not a nice neat little rosewood piano with carvings etc :P. But when you open the top and play it's got the most glorious sound you could imagine.

I wouldn't give it up for all the money in the world ;D

I've had my Henry F Miller 5'11" Grand/ Baby Grand I guess for 25 or more years now. Very old, partially restored when I got it. Has nice sound but you have to stay right on top of tuning the bass, it really should have new bass strings some day. Open the top and it more than fills my house with sound, so I generally leave it down and just have the tuning pin area open. The action is a little light, I added small stick on weights to the key ends ( slid the action out added about 1/4 oz. though 1/8 oz would be about perfect for me.) I'll have to look into the drilled in type weights some day, the stick ons were a trial, now and then one gets thrown off ..

Depressing the pedal on an out of tune acoustic piano and playing does not result in tonal color control or add interest, it's called obnoxious.

Hello,

I was reading you all , because i want to buy a piano for my house (my daughter is a beginner),
but can't make my choice, i had a "Neer"-chinese piano when i was young (which i don't like),
i want to choose a better one for my daughter, but actually it seems that all the good brands are actually produced in China? or Indonesia?
Have you ever heard of G.Hoffmann -made in Indonesia?
i would be gratefull if you can help me in this issue.

V

if you're going chinese specifically (though i would not say your statement that 'all the good brands are actually produced in china...) take a very close look and strong consideration for the hailun pianos.  also the new baldwins are put togethher over at the dongbei shop which until hailun came online, had the repuatation for putting out the top end chinese instruments.  you will still probably need a very competent tech to really finely 'prep' the finished product for it to really approach it's potential but there are some bargains out there.

I just bought a 1919 Chickering Scale 121 Quarter Grand for $2850 - it's been fully restored except the dampers.  My Registered Piano Tuner (who inspected it for me before I bought it) spent a half day tuning and regulating it.  It's BEAUTIFUL and the sound is absolutely magnificent.  I couldn't be happier. :-)

Congratulations! A perfect choice. For some unknown reason Chickering pianos are ignored. I owned one and if I had the space buy another.

One piano in my life that stands out was a Chickering grand piano of about 6 ft or so in size. It was in a club that I played a small performance in and I always thought it was an outstanding piano. I already own a grand but if I was out looking for one I would certainly not turn away a Chickering in good shape ! Congrats !

1941 Steinway 40" console.  Very nice tone, fast enough, stays in tune like the pins were glued in.  Purchased in vile tune 2010, had to tune 7 times.
1982 Sohmer 39" console, Nice tone, fast enough. Wish it would stay in tune better.  The humidifier didn't help.  Owned since 1982.  My Mother's 1954 Everett stayed in tune better, the piano designed by a laid off GM engineer.  The Everett tone wasn't that good, though.

One of my piano's is a 50-year old upright piano "Primorye", but I like it very much because it has a soul, the sound of real wood singing when you play. It looks much like this:

yes, I used to! I loved it so much...I sold it to sustain my sheet music addiction...It only had 73 keys. I want to get an 88 some day, a stage combo, like this one:

I recently bought myself a Yamaha CLP 465GP, that is, a digital Baby Grand. I am extremely pleased with it and I think it looks beautiful. Of course it would have been nice with an acoustic as well, but from practical reasons this is not a possible alternative right now.

During my youth I learned playing on an ordinary upright Petrof. Nobody really liked it, and every "expert" visiting our house was very eager to spontaneously tell us it was no good (what is it with piano players, really?) but at least it stayed remarkably well in tune.

Nord and Yamaha replicate the sound quite well. One of the electric pianos in "general midi" also comes close.

I don't have one but am using the button (E Piano) on my Yamaha. (88 keys)  I turn off variable touch and use the sustain pedal very little. Some bands use a Hammond but that doesn't get it. The Nord sound is good but it only has 60 keys and costs a lot.

I'm listening to a lot of 60's recordings as a guide.

I have Yamaha P95 is a standard 88-key and 64-note digital piano.
The entire setting of the P95 is actually quite similar to another product, the Yamaha P85.
The major difference, however, is the feel of the keyboard and the sound it projects.
The keyboard has weighted keys that are the size of any standard acoustic piano.
The lower octave keys are heavier than the rest, and really similar to the weight of acoustic piano keys.
Piano players in Monsey, New York have relied on Charles Flaum since before 1990 for piano tuning, piano repairs and sage piano advice. Monsey, a family oriented village in Rockland County, is full of

Definitely the right piano at the right price. I have the P85 and couldn't be happier. The big growling bass and the tinkling top sold me. I do however turn the bass down when running through big speakers. Just for retro fun check out the two electric piano push buttons. Turn off touch sensitivity and use the built in speakers. In an instant it's 1967!
