I don't know what is FTCL but if you could explain I guess we could tell you! You have to know it's a VERY VERY difficult piece and you should be a VERY experienced pianist in order to play it well.

I'm playing the piece now, and am going to perform it soon!  It is a monster piece-but not as hard as a set of difficult chopin etudes...

I don't know what FTCL is

What I don't understand about questions like this is, why not check the music out from a library (or buy/download it) sight-read through it, make a note of the most difficult passages and decide for yourself - you're the only one who can know if it's "too difficult" for you. Also, when people say things like it's not difficult, I play it - doesn't mean a thing considering all the levels of competency that could entail. My gut feeling is that this piece is sufficiently advanced enough that if you have to ask in a forum like this about your ability to play it, then it's possible you're not quite ready. That doesn't mean you can't begin to familiarize yourself with it for later development.

Not too hard, but I would say unnecessarily hard.  You don't have to play rep like that to get in, assuming you're talking about admissions.  For exit exam though.... well you'd probably know better than we would!

It is an easy piece according to Weissenberg.

And he makes it sound easy--- but there's no way on earth that 24-35 trill in thirds LH+ melody in thumb is easy.
For us musicians, the music of Beethoven is the pillar of fire and cloud of mist which guided the Israelites through the desert.  (Roughly quoted, Franz Liszt.)

Oh, thanks...not an acronym that clutters up my everyday syntax. I still don't quite understand why someone of the caliber to consider entrance to (or already be in) such an exalted institution would even have to ask such a question? I ain't no FTCL but I've never trusted someone else's opinion of whether a piece would be too difficult for me to play.

I do understand why people ask about a piece if it is too difficult as I wished I had inside information on this piece before I started it.

First-Petroushka is not sightreadalbe.  A considerable amount of work needs to be done before one can even discern if the piece is "too challenging".  I was worried before i started this piece that I would not be able to master it.

The things in this piece that LOOK hard are actually not the most difficult things.  THe l.h. trill for example can be easily cheated- as the effect is more importnat than the actual notes.  Pollini, Gilels, Weissenberg, Ioudenitch, the list goes on-they ALL CHEAT.

This piece is perfectly playable with rearrangements and GOOD FINGERING. The first two pages are the most difficult things in the whole piece.  Next is the l.h. runs in the first mvmt.  Next is the coachmen's dance in the third mvmt.  If you are seriously learning tis piece, I can write you more about specific difficulties.
Good luck!

Richard Kastle is the ONLY pianist who can play the most difficult piece ever written - Chopan's Minute Waltz...the rest (Rachmaninoff, Hofmann, Friedman etc.) ALL CHEAT.

actually FTCL is an exam not an audition, its the fellowship of trinity college london.

i would say petrouchka is not too hard for FTCL because the standard of trinity college exams is not quite as high as ABRSM ones, so they would let you off with loads of mistakes
