I need to get rid of a piano
on: April 10, 2008, 04:15:41 AM
Somewhat related to Slobone's thread.
https://www.pianostreet.com/smf/index.php/topic,29311.0.html

I've got this Nordheimer piano, half of the hammer shanks are broken off.  Was given to me that way and I thought I could learn something by taking it apart and fixing.  Now it is just taking up space and I want to get rid of it - especially since I'm looking to get a practice organ.  I don't want to chuck it in the garbage as I know some people can't afford instruments.

I've tried craigslist, listing as free.  Lot of responses but nobody showed up to pick it up.  Thought about donating to some new music ensembles for some creative use.  Any ideas?

Should I charge something?  I'm not after the money, I just want it gone.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

If you can't use it for tuning or repair practice, how about an art project?  Find a school or college that might want it.

I remember hearing someone wanted musical instruments for an art project.  That was awhile ago though.  If you provide the materials, someone might do something like that.  Maybe they would do something with the hammers still move too.

Depending on the quality, brand of piano you may find someone who restores pianos who would take it, rebuild it and sell it of course. Maybe they would give you something for it but, if you just want it gone give it to them. I know a guy who does piano restoring in the upstate New York area who has a huge warehouse room filled with old beat up neglected pianos just waiting to be reborn. Granted they are stienways, Hamlins, etc... Give it some thought. Check on the internet and see if there is someone near to you who would take it on. Good luck.

I actually learned to tune on it.  Now that I'm comfortable tuning my grand I don't really practice on it anymore.

I'll see about finding someone who wants it for art.  Maybe call a couple piano rebuilders.

Psst.... You need to get rid of a piano?  There are people you can call who do that sort of thing.  "Specialists" in that type of thing.  I'm just saying.

;D  I don't live near any high rise buildings, but will keep a look out for people on rooftops.   But maybe its that piano that should be worrying about stuff like that.

Is Bob watching much CSI or crime dramas lately in order to clear Bob's mind of work?

Durch alle Töne tönet
Im bunten Erdentraum
Ein leiser Ton gezogen
Für den, der heimlich lauschet.

Or maybe you could call a theatre.  They may use it for a prop, it doesn't have to work, just look like it could.

They sure would love you for it.

I know that in just about every production I've been in, a piano was a necessity (prop-wise), and it's very hard to get someone to lend a piano to a group of teenage actors, regardless of how much you are willing to pay.

In short, you'd be the equivalent of a saint!

Another idea can be to give it to a nursing home -
There is a Piano technicians guild that sometimes helps with donating pianos.

Since I have a ministry in a nursing home which did not have a piano - I mentioned it to my piano tuner and the piano technicians guild that he belonged to got together
and tuned it - gave a piano and delivered it all free of charge to the organization.

That was really great for them!
