Gollum is a he.

yd

Gollum is a worm, straight out of Ring of the Nibelungen, which Tolkien was fascinated with.  Wotan, Sigfrid, everybody is in there.  He barely changed the names, Gollum was originally Grendel.

I don't know where you've gotten your information, but my sources contradict you.  In the Niebelungen Saga, there are NO "worms," only the Rhineland city of "Worms."  Grendel does not appear in either the Niebelungen Saga or Wagner's epic poem.  Grendel is the creation of an unknown Anglo Saxon writer who gave us the tale "Beowulf."  Gollum, therefore, would not be based on Grendel (the monster in the "Beowulf").

Most likely, Gollum is based on the dwarf Alberich, father of Hagen, who first steals the ring from the Rhinemaidens, thus initiating the tragedy.  Alberich, et al, are characters in the Nieblungen Saga and Wagner's adaptation of it.

Tolkein was an expert on mediaeval myths and legends. His own works used archetypes from the legends he had studied but seldom (perhaps never) 'lifted' any characters directly from them. Worms, dragons etc. turn up in most of the legends, so it's no surprise there's one in LotR.

I haven't read this entire thread just because it's pointless and I can not be bothered to :)
However, I will just add my 2 pennies worth.

If God made everything perfect and nice, we would not then be able to distinguish what was good and what was bad. We would also not feel happy as we would be happy all the time.
As said on the film Evan Almighty, God doesn't just give us what we want in our prays, he gives us the opportunity to have what we ask.

I have no idea what you are talking about.  Nor, obviously, do you.

In the future, if you feel threads are "pointless," avoid them.

These threads are more like car wrecks.  We should just look away but we gawk at them anyways.
I am no longer fighting my inner demons.  We are now all on the same side.
