Bach Inventions?
on: December 04, 2008, 07:56:01 AM
I'm currently working on a couple of Bach's 2-Part Inventions. No. 1 in C Major and No. 8 in  Major. I've just about got the first invention completely learned so I decided to dive into another one. I just had a four hour practice session and got so much accomplished. I'm very happy and just wanted to tell someone about it I guess.

Anyway... I guess my question is... what all should I be getting from the inventions? Finger-independence? Finger dexterity? Is there anything more than that?

Discuss. :)

The Bach inventions can teach you many things. They will build your technique, make your finger stronger, teach you theory. Bach can teach you everything. Have a look here for more information.

Bernhard's posts are very useful.

mk. So after reading that thread, Bernhard states that the inventions are great for:

-Independence of the hands.
-Contrapuntal thinking.
-Finger dexterity and independence.
-Development of cantabile.
-Equal development of both sides of the body.
-Aural training (following 2/3 melodic strains)
-Reading/sight-reading
-The make excellent material for training in memory methods.

lastly, he says that for more details, we would have to discuss specific pieces. If Bernhard is still here, I would appreciate going over the individual inventions with him, or anybody else that has the resources available, since I don't have a teacher of my own.
Invention No. 1 isn't necessary, because Bernhard has done it in the thread that you linked me to. So, how about Invention No. 8?
