Recital program yay!
on: March 06, 2013, 11:37:49 PM
I'm having my first REAL recital yay!!!

It's gonna be like in late April or early May, so I have time.

Anyways, I need your suggestions on what order I should play the program in.

This is what I have on my mind:

Liszt-La Campanella
Beethoven-sonata Op. 13 No. 8
Rachmaninoff-prelude Op. 32 No. 10
Beethoven-sonata Op. 57 No. 23

SO...  This is how it is...

Chances are, not everyone attending is a musician, (parents and friends of my parents) and I don't want them to fall asleep the first five minutes.  So I wanted to start off with something flashy.

Now the Op. 13 Beethoven is second because I wanna separate the Beethoven sonatas because once again, not everyone's a musician and I feel like that would be too much.

So I did the Rachmaninoff third because I have to split the Beethoven sonatas.

And of course the Appassionata is last because it's just the best piece in the whole program.

So how is it?  I might add a Chopin nocturne or something to put a larger gap between the Beethoven sonatas.

Well I'd enjoy it.

If you put nocturne 9/2 in there you'd probably please a non musician crowd more so than any other nocturne and it will give you a technical reprieve. I imagine that wouldn't be what you'd personally want to play though..

Alternatively you could break it up with something by someone less well known. Everything you're playing there is "big names".

I was gonna do nocturne No. 20 in C# minor.

And ooooh I have some pretty unknown names in my bag of tricks.  I'll do some piece by Arno Babajanian!

Oh wait!  My friend is a composer and he gave me two of his pieces!  I could do one of his!

Or maybe I could do on of Brendan234623698469234923743273427923428s pieces.

why not put the op. 53 polonaise in between your sonatas? it is a crowd pleaser to both non-musician and musician audiences.

Not everyone hates bach you know.

You could join up with these guys..

Australian Bach Society Inc.

Established in October 2011 as an initiative by the German Church East Melbourne, aiming to increase the appreciation and knowledge of the life and works of J.S. Bach in Melbourne and beyond.

I think its a little rude of them to call themselves the bach society and focus on JS exclusively.

I'm trying to get PDQ to sue as we speak.  ;D

@ Rach4 - why not a Carl Vine or Scriabin piece?

I don't know anything by Carl Vine.

I don't feel like getting a Sciabin piece back in circulation.

Maybe I'll do one of his preludes.

I wanted to do the black mass sonata but I don't have enough time. >:(

I'll do some piece by Arno Babajanian!

The fugue from his Polyphonic Sonata would make up for your Bach avoidance.

EDIT: See -

I don't know anything by Carl Vine.

You could bring some of his Bagatelles up to speed in time.

It's not quite No 6.

But it's not really easily accessible to a non-musical audience.  And it would scare some people if you got it right.

Well the room can hold like 40-45 people and let's say my parents and their friends come.  And a few stragglers from off the street.

So that's like 8 non musicians there?

Anyways, if I scared them, That would be soooooooooooo cool!

You'd need to completely redo your repertoire then. Something more like:

1. Tausig/Bach Toccata and Fugue in Dm (to set the tone  ;D )
2. Liszt/Schubert Erelkonig
3. Alkan La Vent
4. Ravel Scarbo
5. Ravel Le Gibet
6. Scriabin Sonata No 6

Do you have time for that?

What do you mean you're not sure to play?!?!?!

It's freaking Halloween!  Find the scariest music and play it.

I'm throwing in Scriabin prelude Op. 67 No. 1.  Or should that be an encore piece?  Do that do those for senior recitals?  But I don't wanna have any 'short' pieces in my program.

Oh, congrats on completing the appassionata.
And yeah youre right. Just play something scary. DUUUH, moi.

Do the encore as something slow and sweer. Like a nocturne or a valse or ta know....u could do thd prelude in your programme, but think about the encore differently.

Actually, I don't have any major pieces in my program so I guess I'll start off with the Bach. >:(

And use the Scriabin prelude in the encore.

I think u could do a part of the bach in the encore(prelude or fugue ir whole thing)  idk. Scruabin seems too much for an encore. But i dont know anything so just tell me what you end up doing and how it goes.

Please don't print "beethoven op. 13, no. 8" in your programme!  It sounds like a new variation on the pathetique.
And not to change the subject, but how di " sul fil d'un soffio etesio" go?"  Did the diva kill you?

We didn't rehearse yet.  But I have the piece ready, so now I'm good.  I think she managed to audition without me.

But anyways, I talked to some other people and they all said she was a diva.  Like she thinks she does everything perfect.  If that's true, then this should be pretty interesting. Hehehe...

And don't like 'pathetique'.  Eeew!!!  That name sucks!

It was used with Beethoven's approval ("Grande sonate pathétique") in the first published edition.  Should you be arguing with Beethoven?

the pathetique is.. op 13 (no 1) if there's an op 13 no 8 then sonatas 2-8 are 7 sonatas i've never heard of.

r4eva says he's playing no 8..  so thats the 1 of 7.

Rach4evvr looks like this when he talks--> 8) ;D

In alternative, what he may have meant is Beethoven sonata no 8 (op 13)

Not 13/8 or Op13 no 8

Don't say that!

There are secret sonatas. Also including Op 57 no. 2-23. The end.

Why not write to Valentina Whatshername and ask her to write you a short piece that you could première in your recital?

You never know; that might help you to win something, albeit not her heart!
