hands, arms, veins! gross??
on: May 03, 2013, 05:48:54 AM
I know guys have veiny hands. But what about girls? Any girls on here that like their hands? Any that don't? I think mine are gross. There is a gigantic vein monster spread across the top of my left forearm, and it bulges out every time I get busy playing. Also, every other vein is very narrow, so they just get dark and nastly looking! Does anyone know if this is a condition? I don't have veins anywhere else on my arms that are as prevalent. It's scaring me!

Do you like the phisique if your hands?

One of the consequences of only playing by reading is that I never get to see mine in action on the keyboard. I'm happy with the delusion that they are transformed into a vision of loveliness.

You could always get more tatts.  ;D

My hand are really not pretty...I have big veins and all the tendons and joints are clearly visible. There's no softness in my hands at all. My fingers are like spider legs and the joints are big with a lot of extra loose skin. My fingertips are not pretty either and the 3rd and thumbs are  crooked. But I cannot say that I dislike my hands, I think they suit my personality :)
I would just like them to be more suitable for playing...

Don't worry, big veins may look scary but are not dangerous, at least if they don't appear suddenly.

EDIT:
There's one pretty handy feature in my hands...I can see my pulse on my wrists  ;D

Praising something in your own looks is considered bad manners, so when people finally admit they have a feature that they DO like, they always seem to feel obliged to add some self-critizism as well.

Now, I will try not to feel like that. Simply: I am terribly proud of my hands. I love them. They are the most beautiful hands I know. (The most familiar too ... to me ...  ::)  ) I never use rings, not even a wedding ring, because I thing they are ugly and uncomfortable, and I cannot have long nails because I play the piano, I don't even use nail polish because I think nothing is worse than nail polish beginning to peel off (yuk!)  but I am insanely proud of my hands nevertheless ...

Unfortunately I have troubles with them in these days. All this piano practicing has given me trouble. My muscles and my tendons ache. Not so that I scream, but I guess I have to rest from piano playing today. Again. :(

When I first came back to piano about a year ago now I had trouble with my hands feeling stiff and swollen. They were not swollen particularly but they would get stiff. That seems to have subsided now. Years ago when I practiced much more and much more complicated music I don't recall that happening but I was years at the piano getting to that level. Being years away this time, i suddenly thought i could put in 3 hours practice and even though it was less complicated music I was using muscles I have not used in a long time. So be it, I'm happy now !

For a guy, in the past my hands were not so bad looking. Now older (63), taking several kinds of meds from blood pressure to water retention reduction to what ever else, I swear the results all went to my hands. Pretty vein y now, pretty boney now, old age blotches, one cancer growth removed from one and a touch of arthritis setting in , they appear a bit messier than before. Oh well, it's what I have and all things considered, not so bad at that !
Depressing the pedal on an out of tune acoustic piano and playing does not result in tonal color control or add interest, it's called obnoxious.

The one thing that pisses me off is that me hands look different than the rest of my body! They are going to age very fast. This is what they look like hours after piano study, relaxed. As you can see, the vein on my forearm is very large...maybe even a centimeter diameter!

But you could still have Fred tattooed on the back of your right hand and Ludvig on the left...or the other way round?

You could then talk to them while playing :)

They do on most of us as they do a lot more work than most parts of the body and spend a lot of time exposed to the elements.

You skin does look a little dry so perhaps you should try some E45.

I will try that! It doesn't doesn't feel dry though, seems like I need vitamins. It looks wrinkly. But it does look sick. I recently lost 20 pounds because of stress. I am not even kidding. There is a lot of purplish tint to the skin on my hands and feet, just like on my face around my eyes and cheeks.

Speaking as a guy, veiny hands are nothing to worry about if you don't worry about what cliques of  women say.  Women are always criticising each other for some unfashionable body part, that they don't share. I hear my female best friend criticize women on the dancing competition television show that I find quite attractive, although they look nothing like her.   Just because one woman is attractive, doesn't mean women that don't look like her, are not, IMHO.
I prefer any woman's hands that can use them effectively at something good.  Lazy porcelein skin like was fashionable in 18th century UK romantic novels, doesn't do a thing for me.
What does attract me to women is proper maintenance of what you were born with.  Women come in all shapes, sizes, and colors but some ways of living are going to wear your body out in a few decades; some ways of living will leave you vigorous happy and useful into your sixth, seventh, or tenth decade.  I prefer to see people living the latter way.  And piano playing is one of the physical skills that makes you useful sometimes and preserves your physique for another day.
In detail, my hands are quite veinous, as were my attractive Mother's.   She could knit a sweater in a week, type at 200 WPM on a manual typewriter, and with a secretarial school certificate as her highest formal education, learned to program bank computers in her fifties.  So learn to do  something useful with your hands like her.
Oh, in any southern climate, wear sunscreen.  The army gave me some at age 18, and using it pro-actively has preserved my wrapper much more than any surfer dudes or cowboys in their sixth decade (as I am).

(Resolutely ignoring the previous few comments  :o)

Hands show the age of the person more honestly than any other aspect of the body does.  The face can be made-up to look wrinkly or surgically lifted to look young, but the hands tell the truth.

The O.P. has nice youthful hands that might possibly enjoy some shea butter, and a good healthy vein.   That vein is your friend: if you need blood drawn the techs can find it right away, instead of stabbing you randomly 5 or 6 times with needles so the whole arm turns black-and-blue. I speak from experience.  --s.

I'll second starlady. I'm in the medical business. The bigger the veins on the hands and arms, the better. Never know when you might need an i.v. stat. It might save your life.

And short, working nails--nothing better. Nothing worse than long, ridiculous nails. Years ago my sister played the piano and her clacking manicure drove me crazy (a short trip, admittedly, but still...).
