OMG: Lara St. John can actually play the violin!
on: December 19, 2013, 02:14:21 AM
No joke! Wow. :D

If you don't know who she is, or why she's famous, she made a splash onto the classical music scene by selling CDs with an obscene picture of her wearing only her violin:

So in the years since her debut CD came out (in 1996), I haven't even once bothered to see if she could actually play or make music.  I'm delightfully surprised that yes can!

Now, if a classical pianist can market herself like St. John did... I wonder how she would use the piano to promote her modesty.  Maybe an interesting angle with the fallboard?  Lying inside the piano case with the lid down (not that there's room to do that)?  Take out the action and hold some keys in strategically placed locations?  Or maybe some strategically placed hammers?

I'm actually being quite serious about all of this.  If we can find a female pianist who can make very good music and has the looks and charisma to sell both CDs and concerts, that would be great for classical piano music since it would attract a far larger audience.  Alicia Keys just doesn't do it.

I don't think she meant it as a cheap marketing trick. What she seemed to be saying is that Bach's sonatas and partitas expose the most vulnerable in a person; the emotional part of you that you wouldn't want to show to just anyone. Getting associations across with visuals, though, does not always work as intended.

How did Picasso phrase that again? "Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up."

It is a little know fact his long name caused his brain to melt, thus his artistic perspectives.

Even with his brain melt through said circumstances, I suspect he would still have enough brain capacity left to infer that Lara St. John is not a pornstar who can play a little violin. At worst, he might have thought that it was about time for a fundraiser since Lara has nothing to wear and it can be pretty cold in Canada this time of the year. His wife could then have convinced him that a fundraiser would most likely not be needed, since the violin Lara is holding in her hand could easily sell for one and a half million dollars.
P.S.: Thank you for respecting both the living and the dead.
