The only Chopin Etudes I like:
Op. 10 #1, 2, 9, 12; Op. 25 #1, 3, 7, and 9, and 11. And yes, I've heard all of them. But none of them are as good as the Liszt Etudes I listed.

I also like Rachmaninoff Etude 33 8. It's so beautiful. Also, Scriabin 42 5 has a very tender part, and the ending/climax is HEARTBREAKING. I LOVE IT. But the beginning is ugly.

Liszt was more harmonically inventive. But in terms of rhythmic clarity, melodic ideas, consistency in the quality of his music, Liszt doesn't even touch Chopin. You think the Chopin etudes are crap? You should go write a set of etudes that have more poetic vision then. Liszt wrote some GREAT works, but he was a complete hit and miss composer, and he missed the target a lot more than he hit it . Chopin on the other hand, put out masterpiece after masterpiece after masterpiece. He never went through a weak compositional period and almost every single piano composition of his is masterfully crafted to the highest level of poetry. I can't say the same thing about Liszt. Virtually every Chopin melody is memorable, even his rhythmic contour can be remembered even without the musical tones most of the time. Also, Chopin almost never wrote difficult things for the sake of being difficult. You cannot make a Chopin etude technically easier without it losing its musical quality. The Liszt Transcendental Etudes that are played today are REVISIONS of old etudes Liszt wrote with the same exact melodic ideas, but he just added an extra layer of virtuosic technique to make it even harder. The old etudes were great as they were, so the fluff Liszt put in the etudes later on doesn't even add to the musical quality. Every technical difficulty in Chopin's music has musical meaning (except maybe some of the early works that were in a more " brilliante " style.) but so much of Liszt's music is just superficial. There are some great pieces by Liszt, like the B minor sonata, Sonetto 104, and the valse oubliee are brilliant. I can just say that for me personally, Liszt's music provides very little emotional satisfaction. Most of it was written to make money and please the crowd. Chopin had other things in mind.

Op. 1 is always interesting.  It may not be a really really good (iconic) piece of that particular composer though.  In most cases, however, it tells how good a composer was at the beginning of his composing career.  Right compared to the late compositions, Op. 1 tells how the composer had developed and grown in his composition life.

When I mentioned it to her, she was like, "The Chase?" (The Chase is the nickname given to the Paganini Etude #5 which is almost a note-for-note transcription of the violin original )

(Which was nat exactly true, because my fav composer amd my "specialty" was Chopin, and I played Chopin FAR better than she did). And then, she said "oh, and NO LISZT ETUDE is harder than a SINGLE CHOPIN ETUDE". what Stupid teacher. She broke her hand (or so she claims) by playing Chopin's Op. 10 #2. And she had to get surgery to make her hand smaller. That's a lie, however, because BOTH HANDS ARE THE EXACT SAME LENGTH. So, I know that she had naturally small hands. SHE IS SUCH A #glennross (but much worse).

Sorry, I just HATE Chopin now. I know that I'm basically killing myself because my enemy said I was bad, but I am just SO ANGRY>

BTW do you know why it is "easier" to play Liszt musically than Chopin(or so piano teachers claim)?
Answer: Because Liszt wrote his music very musically, but Chopin did not. So, you have to be more musical with Chopoin.

Arrau (listen to his Liszt Un Sospiro/Rigoletto Paraphrase, or listen to his Chopin. OMG)

Dinnerstein (but sometimes she's kinda TOO  eccentric musically I. e. the Sarabande from the 5th French Suite  )

Sokolov (insert heart emojis)

Andre Laplante (listen to his Ravel OMG)

Zimmerman (No comment- he's the greatest pianist EVER for the Chopin Ballade 4)

Evgeni Kissin (not always as impressive, but once u listen to his Chasse neige, u'll know what I'm sayin. ESPECIALLY when you compare him to metronome-followers such as Kholodenko [I mean, he's better than me, obviously, but still, not as insightful as the great EVGENI KISSIN.)

I also like Pletnev's Tchaikovsky. I personally like his Scarlatti, but who cares, because outin doesn't and outin is my new friend.





That b!tch teacher would hate ALL OF THEM. Because:
(1) They change the speed "way too much" (as in ritardandos, accelerandos, rubatos, etc.)
(2)They put crescendos in where the composer doesn't (as if the compsers had the TIME to write all of the dynamics/shaping in )
(3)They do way to many things she disses as "European". what she's always talking about how u have to play like the composers, but the thing is, the compsoers were EUROPEAN
And also, many Americans actually LIKE what she calls "European", and also, I had lessons from both a French AND a Russian teachers, and they recommended me not do it in the intros of pieces.
(4) Those pianists don't ALWAYS obey Carl Mikuli's instructions in a piece written by Frederic Chopin

OK ajlongspiano, I'm sorry for attacking you and Chopin. Now that I kick out my biases, Chopin's music IS generally more beautiful. I mean, the only Etude by Chopin that is as ugly as Mazeppa is the Etude Op. 25 #10.

Also, I think a lot of Liszt music is too "Brahmsian" for my taste. It is really thick in txture, which makes it really ugly. But lots of music is beautiful, too.

 And I think Liszt's earlier music is kind of not good, even though it is as thin as piano music gets.

Maybe the machine cannot handle a number above 400

The etude sounds terrible. And feels terrible. I'm not sure if it's going to happen! ha ha, I might just have to wait until I'm like 18 (and a little bit better ) and I've completely forgotten it then get it ready for the chopin competition application with a clean slate. I learned it with the 1-1 double white key crossings which really slows it down. But now I can't change it to the 2nd finger slide off the black key way because I've practiced the 1-1 way too much. Also I can't really spend a ton of time on it because of the competition I have coming up. Oh well.

Answer: Because Liszt wrote his music very musically, but Chopin did not. So, you have to be more musical with Chopoin.

Wrong. Chopin's music is technically difficult to play but should sound easy, while Listz clearly wanted his music to sound difficult as well. So it's easy to forget about the essence of music. And that's the reason why I've never liked his music really. The pianist's struggles or virtuosity do not really interest me one bit, just like I don't get excited of watching sports...

But I agree, I love Chopin's Don Juan more than Liszt's Don Juan.   But when Liszt isn't blowing over the top with trying to makes things sound hard, I kind of like his compositions. I don't have a single Chopin piece I like better than the Sonnneto 104 del Petrarcha. (Well, that's not exactly true. I also like:

AJ, none of this is a personal attack, I just strongly disagree with you here.

Liszt was more harmonically inventive. But in terms of rhythmic clarity, melodic ideas, consistency in the quality of his music, Liszt doesn't even touch Chopin. You think the Chopin etudes are crap? You should go write a set of etudes that have more poetic vision then.

The old argument of "it's not bad if you can't do better?" C'mon AJ, you're smarter than that

Hardly. As fun as the mazurkas can be, the number of ones that really stick out are around 20 or so out of 65 or however many he wrote.

Here's where you're actually factually incorrect, my friend. The TE went through three stages- the first being imitative of the bland etudes of Czerny and Clementi of the time. Then, as Liszt's career took off, he took these and made them damn near unplayable. Years later, he revised it to actually make it less demanding and more musical; he didn't add "fluff", he took it off.

Every technical difficulty in Chopin's music has musical meaning (except maybe some of the early works that were in a more " brilliante " style.)

Even things like the perfect fourths chromatically rising in Op. 53? There are plenty of ways to achieve the effect of spiraling upwards, or however you'd like to describe it, but why that one? Granted, it's not an etude, but it's hard to ascribe musical qualities onto technical difficulties when it's not clear exactly how that particular texture of music creates the desired results; such as the thirds in the coda of the Op. 52 of Chopin.

but so much of Liszt's music is just superficial. There are some great pieces by Liszt, like the B minor sonata, Sonetto 104, and the valse oubliee are brilliant. I can just say that for me personally, Liszt's music provides very little emotional satisfaction.

That's highly subjective to each of us, as you stated, but those are just a few select pieces of Liszt's enormous output. Chopin and Liszt are apples and oranges, it's damn near impossible to compare.

Most of it was written to make money and please the crowd. Chopin had other things in mind.

Comparing Liszt and Chopin is honestly pointless. It's impossible to say who was better, they're too different for that.
