Schumann or Brahms?
on: July 18, 2016, 09:06:56 PM
Good evening,

I have to choose a work for an exam (bachelor degree).
Since Schumann's works (which I like very much) are quite huge overall, I'm having some trouble deciding which piece I should play.
On the other hand, Brahms, I think, is a bit overplayed.. op 117, 118 and similia.. and op.79 was already played.
Do you have any suggestions for a mid-length piece about 15 minutes, if there's any, by Brahms or Schumann?

Thank you very much
Best wishes
Kos

If you are looking for less played pieces, here are 3 that are about 15 minutes long that are among my favorites:

Brahms: Schumann variations op 9
Brahms: Variations on an original theme op 21 no. 1
Schumann:  Gesange der Fruhe op. 133

I'd pick 15+ minutes worth of the Brahms Hungarian Dances that Moszkowski transcribed faithfully for solo pf 2h.  They are super well laid out, sound great, and do not appear on programs that often .
