I think that you can find this phenomenom in all minority groups. They develop a sense of superiority because they think they have something "normal" people dont have.
I also think that these groups have a tendency to overestimate the energy the others are putting in the interest they self are interested in as themselves (hm, there may be something wrong with that sentence, it looks weird).
For example music. For example, a person who yearns for classical music and just loooooves OC, look down at people who listen to "low quality music".
But hey, maybe these people just dont have the same fascination for music as him? And if he does, so what?
Imagine a bunch of car enthusiasts hanging out outside a gas station, talking about cars and engines and stuff. Suddenly this old crappy car drives in, and stops to get some fuel. Right before he is about to turn off his engine, it makes a weird noise, and it stops. The door opens, and out comes this real nerd-looking guy with two toms thick glasses, marmelade on his shirt and his pants pulled up to his throat (thinking about the finger sentence in some Scriabin etude).
The car enthusiasts then knows excactly what the the problem is, and yelles: "Its the carburator that broke, check it out." The guy just nods and opens the hood. Without actually knowing what to do, he opens the cooling system.
The car enthusiasts then cracks up. "HAHAHAHA OH MY GOD WHAT AN IDIOT!!! WHAT THE HELL IS HE DOING!?? So typical academic people, dont know a sh*t about practical stuff!!!! GO BACK TO CANADA, IDIOT!!"

With time, as these people grow up, (hopefully) i think they will discover that other people doesnt necessarily have a problem with tying their shoe laces even though they listen to pop music.
