The Best Pianist on this Forum
on: May 11, 2006, 02:25:54 AM
So, who's the best pianist on this forum? Very simple question.

Empty bragging won't do. Your case must be backed up with evidence from the Audition Room. Then we can create another poll thread to pick the winner.

(Yes, I know this a pointless, stupid thread. But there are probably at least a dozen more stupid threads active right now).

Crazy for Ivan something is very good. He had a link to a video of himself playing Suggestion Diabolique and it was very good, and I haven't heard his Schumann that's in his signature but from remembering the posts in the audition room thread that posted it, it was good also.

Also there was someone quite a while ago who posted up an improvisation video which was real good, I think it was donjuan.

What matters is that no one here is at the level of great. That makes improvement the focus, not who is the best of an imperfect bunch. I will, though, take the nomination for worst pianist. Lol.

Jonathan Powell doesn't really count since I think he's only posted here like... 2 times.

Ian Pace > Jonathan Powell but Pace refuses to admit who he is on this forum so he doesn't count either.

Lisztmaninopin and Skeptopotamus/I Love Xenakis both CLAIM to be rediculously skilled (IE playing Nancarrow, Alkan, Xenakis) but there is next to no evidence of them actually even being able to play, let alone play that well.  If either of them were as good as they said they were they'd probably be the head contenders.

Mei-Ting Sun hasn't posted in months.

Which leaves Koji, who plays Nancarrow, Roslavets, Reger etc. and probably some of the most beautiful Scriabin that has ever been recorded.

I vote for Koji.

I also quite like Mei Ting Sun's playing. He seems to have a huge rep aswell for a young guy.

Mr. B. is someone who pretends to know everything. If he is that knowledgable, why doesn´t he posts one of his recordings. But maybe he is very bad because he had played too much Czerny (as Ferenc Liszt did) !? :)

franzliszt2. performed rach paganini rhapsody when he was 18. and performed gnomenreigen, appassionata & chopin scherzo no 3 in london when he was 17!

But did he play them well? Sure he'll have the technique to learn them, but imho I like to listen to a beautiful interpretation. In fact I'd love to hear his Gnomenreigen, as I love to discover how each pianist plays it. It can sound so different, and so many different voices that have the potential of sounding beautiful.

Franzliszt2, I urge you to record Gnomenreigen and post it here, I'd love to hear your interpretation!

Sorry if I offended. That was not my intention. My intention was to express my disgust at the stupidity and immaturity of this thread and similar threads.

And to answer your question, no, it doesn't. If that's what good piano playing means to you - playing the hardest pieces at the youngest age - then I feel sorry for you. It's threads like these, and, being blunt, posts like these that make me want to leave this forum.

Might I suggest a new rule for this thread?  I propose that you cannot, I repeat CANNOT vote for yourself.  Any votes to your name must be submitted by someone other than yourself, who has seen/heard your recordings and can vouch for your musicianship.

Anyone object?

I don't think this thread is necessarily that stupid.  As long as one doesn't take the idea of "the best" too literally, I think a topic like this can be fun and interesting. In the audition room recordings are judged one by one, here is a chance to summarize what one has heard so far.

I've been especially impressed by El Nino's Mozart fantasia and Chopin Ballade; Debussy prelude by Thorn; and Nortti's Rachmaninoff Etude.

El nino for his great ability play very tight structurally; the other two for their beautiful sound and great fire in their playing.

i can get a lot of sound out of the piano with minimal effort.  you should hear me play 'beautiful dreamer variations' (on the stephen foster melody) does that count?  i can play other things too - do you want to hear.  ok.  someone come over here and record me.  i'm getting frustrated by the idea of never being able to post a recording because i haven't got the gear.  does anyone live nearby collegeville?  can anyone record me for 5  minutes?   maybe 10 minutes.  i'm not as good as before i broke the leg, but my leg isn't the problem anymore.  it's the mind.  last night i pulled an 'allnighter' helping my son finish a school project (why why why).  now u understand? it will be mid-summer before i have all the rep back into shape (scarlatti, barber, beethoven, brahms handel var. (on var 8).  blah blah blah - yes i'm just motivated because i want to show my teacher i can do it.  i can be a performer.  i can handle the stress (stares into space with four year old alone).

i'd also like to hear lostinidlewonder, arensky, tds, gaer, and a few others.  guess that you really don't knwo until the audition room how much you like certain people's playing -but then again - if they are selling a cd they might not play for the general public for free.  wish you could all hear the recent cd of carl cranmer (soiree).  his playing is unpretentious and very into 'the sound' of it all (as with koji).  though i am way below his level - he has some excellent students as well.

if you can play great AND teach great - you've probably got it made!  bernhard included.  he seems unpretentious as well - and full of great info which only comes from playign ALOT of pieces.

*boohoo about not getting a ticket to the upcoming kimell center concert where (oh what's his nam) is playing the new wannamaker organ.  if you can play piano and organ (and banjo) you're great in my book.
