Most late romantic orchestral music I have a tough time with. I think this is because I grew up listening to boogie woogie, rock, beethoven, and vivaldi, and not much else. I have little taste for things that develop really slowly or are highly complex in form (in other words, form that requires me to remember what happened 10 minutes ago...forget about it). I require "catchiness" to enjoy music. As most late romantic and later music is not catchy, I find I cannot relate to it.

funny I myself am totally bored with anything that is catchy and 'obvious'
all I'm listening to atm is exactly what you don't like, like Scriabin's symphonic poems

I can't stand a lot of Liszt, but I do love some of his more subtle music, like Au Bord D'une Source.
Also I don't understand Brahms for one bit, it bores me to death.

Alkan. I do not understand what made him compose what he composed. I'm not a big fan of Liszt.

I've been listening to a lot more of music, and I've come to the conclusion that I really dislike both Wagner and Strauss.

Schumann. I've really tried to like his music, I've made several concerted attempts to get into it but apart from the first movement of the piano concerto and the Eintritt from Waldszenen it just leaves me cold. Clara does nothing for me either.

I once listened to a CD od Alkan's piano works and I was bored rigid.

I can't stand Elgar, it reminds me of so many things I dislike about England.

I don't like Liszt, Schubert and Schumann very much. Although I do like some of their pieces such as, Liebestraum, Hungarian Rhapsody, Liszt's variations on a theme of Paganini, Liszt's transcriptions of Beethoven's symphonies, Schumann's Traumerei, and a few of his piano sonatas as well. As for Schubert... Well I really don't like him. :/

eesh, you only like the popular pieces.. disappointing. Try Liszt's Jeux D'eau and Schumann's Fantasie and Schubert's Wanderer Fantasie and see if you change your mind
Ravel Jeux D'eau
Brahms 118/2
Liszt Concerto 1
Rachmaninoff/Kreisler Liebesleid

Yeaaah... I have listened to more of their pieces and I just didn't really appreciate them. I guess their popular works are popular for a reason. :/ Well, in the end, It's still a matter of taste. Disappointed eh? Because I don't like your favorite composer? How disappointing...

none of those 3 are my favorite composers fyi. Schumann and Schubert are an acquired taste in my opinion so I understand if you don't like them. Liszt on the other hand, most people don't like him because he has the general stereotype that his compositions are all technique and no music, which has to be the falsest generalization of classical music next to the generalization that classical music is peaceful and thus boring.

I can't really tell you to like these composers since in the end it IS personal taste. However, one cannot simply dismiss these composers as trash simply because you do not like the few compositions you have listened to. One cannot avoid a composer simply because they cannot understand their music.

Well then, I must apologize If I sounded rude. Although I did not regard them as trash in any way; I just retaliated a little because your first message felt a bit condescending to me. I simply am unable to appreciate much of their works, I will try and listen to their works that you mentioned then maybe I will be able to appreciate them more.

Guilt by association, IMO. With the exception of a few occasional pieces, I don't hear much that is 'English' about Elgar. He belongs firmly in the tradition of Mahler and Richard Strauss.

Only Mahler and Strauss are exponentially better than him.

I can't stand most of Brahms' music, except his paganini Variations and his Ballade in D minor.
Funny? How? How am I funny?
