Auckland's climate has certainly become warmer since I was a boy. Twenty years ago we planted a banana tree - correctly it's a shrub really I suppose - and had many hearts of bananas from it every year. We have since removed it but there was no way bananas would grow in Auckland fifty years ago. However, much to my wife's annoyance, it is still not warm enough to grow mangos, which she loves.
And yet funnily enough, last August brought the first snow in Auckland for many decades. I was sitting staring out the window and wondered what was causing the peculiar, slow-falling rain outside. Then later I read in the paper that snow had fallen in the local park and realised what it was.
