usually i have to tell the check out lady what kind of greens i am buying. they only know leaf lettuce, and iceburg lettuce. when i get collard greens or kale it really confuses them.
i know what you mean about crazy in the store. but, i just think that if i went into another culture and wanted to know answers - i'd hope they wouldn't joke with me. so, i'd seriously answer 'do these look like peaches to you?'
Oh, of course. There are times when a question like that is appopriate, but this sure wasn't one of them. The girl was hardly a foreigner - she seemed like an average, clueless, American college student.
Hell, I've got far too much of an ego for that - if I was curious, I'd most likely end up snapping a quick picture of it with my cellphone and looking it up online...safe from public scrutiny.

And even if not, I'd most certainly not yell it out in the most obnoxious tone, "R THOZE NEW KINDA PEACHES, *SNORT*"
