Did you Know???
on: April 07, 2009, 01:26:10 PM
I like learning random facts which make us say, wow I didn't know that! I'll start with one:

- Did you know that rats can go without water longer than camels?

Did you know there are a lot of rats in Chicago?

Btw, baby camels are born without a hump.  New one to me, too.  Since you mentioned camels - i looked it up.

Did you know that marriage is no longer recognized in the USA as a valid form of maintaining legal identity?  For instance, credit card companies still consider you single and will only speak to the first holder of the credit card.  If you tell them 'i'm the spouse' - they will say something like ' but this is our policy.'

Policy should never be hidden behind.  Route out stupidity by speaking your mind or facts will change to whatever is convenient truth.

- Did you know that you can light a candle without direclty touching the wick with a flame? What you do is light a candle, blow it out, then carefully put a flame above the column of smoke rising up, the candle will magically light up :)

Why not try it for yourself in your local Roman Catholic Church?

The candle trick really does work, its very fun to show people who have never seen it before. Let the candle burn for about 15 seconds or so, when you blow the candle out don't be careful about it, just blow it one fast burst, then let the column of smoke rise and then put a flame above it. You may have to test it out how high you can hold it, try lower positions then go higher. Best to do it without wind around you.

DB really? I hope you didn't get a sex change to go with it :)

-Did you know that putting a packet of mentos in a bottle of soft drink is a bad mix, I suggest you try it outside where you don't mind things getting messy :)

Yes, in fact "Gesundheit" means "little death."

actually it means "health," with the implied meaning "to your health."  some germans will say "schoenheit" instead, which means "beauty," and hopefully I don't have to explain the rest of the joke.  :)

A Kangaroo Rat (arid regions of the western and southwestern U.S) can go it's entire life of 3 - 5 years without taking a single sip of water, I dunno about a pet rat... My father-in-law breeds rats for snake food :) In the desert bacteria in their encysted stage can survive for hundreds of years without water.

Pronouncing it is not easy either, especially for the non Welsh i would guess.

All maps i have seen use the shortened version, but the full name of the town used to be on a sign in the railway station.

Did you know I just wasted 10 minutes of my sleeping time posting all this?

- Did you know that the average human eats 8 spiders in his/her life time while sleeping? I was wondering what the clawing feeling in my stomach was. Apparently an average human eats about 10-20 spiders per year.

Some health facts;

- Did you know that people who use tanning beds regularly have a melanoma risk eight-fold higher than people who never used tanning beds?

- Did you know that brushing your teeth and using mouthwash will never clean your teeth properly? You must always floss to get inbetween your teeth, flossing removes plaque from between your teeth where periodontal (gum) disease and cavities begin. Those who develop gum disease later in life usually do not floss.

- Did you know that Onychophagia (the habit of biting your nails) poses a hazard to your health. Did you know that there are about 2,000 types of skin infections that were discovered in nail salons?

On the topic of eating spiders,

Did you know the town of Skuon (Vietnam) is well-known for its deep-fried tarantulas in garlic and salt? Crispy on the outside and gooey on the inside, you pull the crispy legs off first and then split the body open to eat the soft flesh inside, taking care not to eat the abdomen (which contains its faeces).

- Did you know the worlds worst natural disaster was the Yellow River Flood - 1931, China with 1,000,000 - 4,000,000 deaths?

1938 Yellow River Flood refugees.

The 1931 Yellow River flood (Huang He flood) is generally thought to be the deadliest natural disaster ever recorded. Deaths caused by the flooding include but are not limited to drowning, disease, ensuing famines, and droughts. Lesser population densities in prehistoric times make it unlikely that this toll had previously been surpassed.

The river is often called “China’s sorrow” because millions of people have been killed by flooding.

- Did you know that half the world's people don't have access to a toilet or a clean latrine? People often relieve themselves in the bushes or in a field. Only 30 percent of the world uses toilet paper. Alternatives include hands, water, sand, small rocks, mud, leaves, rope and seaweed. I prefer what my dog uses, the carpet. :-X

- Did you know that despite all the evidence, people still continue to believe (incorrectly so) that Thomas Crapper is the man who invented the toilet?  The man holds nine patents, four for improvements to drains, three for water closets, one for manhole covers and the last for pipe joints. Crapper NEVER invented the toilet.

Ever wonder where airoplane toilet waste goes?

- Did you know that the so-called "blue ice" or "brown goo" that accumulates within airplanes does drop onto unsuspecting targets from time to time.

Recently, an unlucky resident of Santa Cruz, California, received a special blue ice delivery courtesy of an American Airlines plane right through the skylight of his boat. He took the airline to small claims court and won a modest sum. A Pittsburgh woman's home was also subject to such a delivery. Other folks describe mysterious biological material that appears splattered around their houses and property.

FAA document on "management of aircraft washes and similar wastes" explains how wastes are collected, separated, and treated in a specially devised tank system. However, it doesn't elaborate on waste disposal.
