i recently discovered a huge archive of 'modern music' publications, a quarterly subscription score publication than was dedicated to printing modern music (modern at its time) that was deemed commercially unprofitable by main publishers so they were tasked with getting music out that would other wise not see print.

amongst the archives (i focused on piano music issues fromn 1935-1950) was this piece by conlon nancarrow, an important work in his output. i think his first piano solo work ? (i need to double check).

prelude and blues. he really lets his jazz influences show/shine here. the work is outstanding!

It's followed by Reflets dans l'Eau and the other Images in my playlist.

Every time I've read this thread for the past few days, I've been listening to the same thing, but not today:

Ravel's Gaspard de la Nuit-Le Gibet

Ravel's Une Barque Sur L'Ocean from Miroirs, played by Jean-Yves Thibaudet

I personally think this is the best recording of this beautiful piece.

Funny, I was just listening to an album of Schoenberg by Pollini that I found from an old stack of CD's...got inspired by a another thread. I can't say I understand the music, but I do enjoy it...

Rachmaninoff sonata #1

I think it's easily his best work for solo piano.

I hadn't ever listened to Gieseking's Ravel. I'm not a big fan of his Debussy (I like Thiollier) but that recording of Sonatine was fantastic.

I'm not a big fan of Debussy so no loss here. :P He was said to be the best of pianists by Ravel himself. lol I did like his Sonatine, but I porbably will not listen to any other composer played by him. Who do you think plays the best Chopin besides Zimmerman and Richter?

My favourite Chopin interpreter is Richter, but after that it's Rubinstein. I don't know why but I'm very drawn to Rubinstein's Chopin. I think he has the correct touch for it, but that's not why I like it. I can't quite figure it out...
