Granted, other composers did compose pointlessly difficult pieces (e.g. Alkan's Le Preux, some of Liszt's original Etudes, Liszt's Spanish Fantasy, Brahms' Paganini Variations, etc.), but Rachmaninoff is the only remotely well-known composer (i.e. not Mereaux et. al.) who did so regularly.

Contrast this with many of the hardest works of Liszt or Alkan (e.g. Alkan's Concerto for Solo Piano and Op. 76 Trois Grande Etudes, Liszt's Beethoven Symphony Transcriptions, La Clochette, Reminiscences de Lucrezia Borgia, and Tannhauser Overture, etc.), where the difficulty serves to add to the music, rather than being the music.
