Of course, there might not be any non-MAGA Republicans left. Maybe I do need to adopt the no Republicans ever mindset for my own good.

I feel sort of politically homeless, especially because I am disappointed how many liberals here (including socialists) are anti-development in the name of building "truly" affordable housing. We need more affordable housing from the national level. But if our national economy is not willing to provide us with the resources we need for that, there's not enough funding for our city to achieve it without restricting it an extremely low income minority. There are so many middle income people that can't afford housing because of how opposed people here are to building literally anything that is not a single family house.

The younger progressive Democrats do seem promising. I agree with most of the common Democrat talking points but the housing crisis is so bad everywhere and it's embarassing how little we are doing to fix it.

The "non-MAGA Republicans" e.g. Liz Cheney are still awful people. They're just slightly less awful than MAGA Republicans, who are slightly less awful than groyper/Nick Fuentes-style Republicans (if they're even distinct from MAGA Republicans).

Don't get me wrong, most establishment Democrats are still awful people as well. But there's an ocean between anti-Trump Republicans (who, by definition, still advertise themselves as Republicans) and actual Democrats.

Yep, that's another thing that bugs me. Public transit is so much more enjoyable besides the fact that you can get to a bus stop and not know if your bus will come in 5 minutes, 30 minutes or an hour. Not to mention that bus drivers don't even follow their own route all the time with the crazy deviations that are devised in suburban areas. We need frequent transit/rail that is on time and easy to use. I don't even care about high speed rail at the moment. There are like 2 trains a day from here to DC, and the train that goes to Chicago isn't even daily. IMO DC - NYC should be every 1 hour minimum and there should not be any lines running anything less than 2/day.

The interstate highway system was able to eat up so much space through eminent domain but new rail is seemingly impossible. Were the highways somehow more "essential" than new railroads? It seems pretty clear that they are different modes to meet the same types of demand, so that's more of an issue of suburbanization and redlining. I could see there being more rail lines along the wider highways, like the WMATA silver line extension along I-66.

I brought up housing first because it's more universally controversial. Much of the left supports impractical housing policy that accelerates the gentrification that they condemn. We need an all of the above approach for as long as we're capitalist at a national level.

They do serve different demands, but the US has those demands backwards. Trains, trams, etc. should function primarily as transportation for people, with freight left mostly for road travel. Obviously there can and should be some crossover. But a rail line is capable of moving way more people than a highway over any timeframe, so it makes no sense to restrict rail to moving things instead of people.
