You’re like watching paint dry, waiting for bread to toast, watching water come to a boil, or staring at grass grow.

Like waiting for glue to set, watching a snail cross the road, watching a clocks hour hand move.

Maybe not in the literal sense....but he's such a fool, and always been.  For the past thirty years or so he's always spouting off about some ridiculous conspiracy theory or some such twaddle.

Not that it matters; it just tends to populate the British press whenever he goes on some inane rant, which can be distracting.

Obviously, as an American, I'm in no position to judge your head of state nor head of government....ahem....Scott Morrison.....trust me, I'm very much aware of "some problems" with US governance as well as the "choices" of my compatriots....

But I still think it would have been better if the French prevailed in the North American "front" back in the day.  I don't think the French would have massacred with such glee the aboriginals.

Hey J_Tour... missed you. Won't get any argument from me regarding the ol' King.

Scott Morrison is also not our leader. We ditched him for another spineless jellyfish. One who at least was less of a religious zealot, but still seemed like would topple over in a moderate gust of wind.

I think anyone would have massacred anyone they thought was endangering them. The Brits were also defending themselves against a race of unknown people who were throwing weapons at them in a bid to kill them. The stronger race won... Unfortunately that is called "Darwinism".

I didn't say it was right... but civilisations have been doing that for thousands of years.

That's history for you... War unfortunately forced many people to build bigger and better guns.

The problem isn't with me - it's with human nature. I didn't say it was 'good'... I just said it's happened.

Same thing happened with the colonisation of America.

Same thing happened with the colonisation of America.

Well, historically the French didn't have as many problems coöperating with the natives they encountered in what is now, regrettably, the US instead of New France.

Don't forget, the French and the "Indians" were allied against the Brits and their limey colonialists.

Of course there were atrocities against the British they took as prisoners of war, in some cases with collaboration from the French allies, the indigenous natives.  But more or less a more calm harmonious character to inter-French-indigenous relations.

But by any account, they did not have the inborn zeal for elimination and destruction that the Brits or the Dutch or Belgians had.

Exactly... I'm not saying history was great - it's full of some our darkest times and the atrocities some civilisations committed should be forgotten; but we don't forget them to remind us of how we've evolved as a species and that we've implemented order and civility into society. Our dependency on other countries for goods, services and other essential items brought us together and proved that we need each other on a global scale.

Well... the only way to stop war and violence is to lobotomise everyone...

Don't ever see that happening... but hopefully each decade humanity is on this Earth, we learn to be more civil and accepting of other societies and countries.

The world is not more accepting or civil to one another. Wishful thinking. Want to stop war? Kill all humans, maybe our AI masters will do that in time.

While AI is smart enough to paint us pretty pictures and make shitty 10 second videos for Facebook showing all sorts of dumb crap, I doubt it's smart enough even over the next 20 years to 1) develop an actual consciousness or 2) begin to even understand the psychology of the human race.

I'm not worried about AI.

Or submit to the French civil rule of law and custom.

However, don't forget that war is the business of the French, and they are very, very good at it.

I'm not worried about AI.

Well that's good.

There does not exist AI at present, nor likely will ever.

Simply more-or-less advanced tools that provide the unscrupulous to bilk and defraud others.

On your second point, maybe give this article a read;

https://gizmodo.com/gpt4-open-ai-chatbot-task-rabbit-chatgpt-1850227471

And that’s old news now. The AIs we have today are far more capable and intelligent.

If that doesn’t count as “beginning to understand the psychology of the human race” then I don’t know what you’re talking about.

Personally, I don’t think it’s so easy to dismiss the concerns people are raising about AI. It’s all too plausible to me that this could go very, very wrong 😑

Okay... interesting read, although one could point out that maybe ChatGPT just happened to convince a very DUMB human being to solve the Captcha for them.

There are many of us who are very wary and cautious thanks to the endless swarm of junk email, scam alerts on phones, and people trying to datamine your personal information.

Practically all intellectual jobs humans are doing right now are at extreme risk of becoming obsolete in the near future. We are already seeing jobs become obsolete, just have a quick research and see for yourself.

The human piano teacher job is about to be severely disrupted I'd say within the next 5 or less years. When a student can work 24/7 with an AI that is more expert in teaching than any human and can do it at a fraction of the cost you have to have money to waste if you want an inferior human instead. Any educator who doesn't embrace AI will become totally obsolete, and as we embrace it less human teachers will be necessary if at all.

AI already knows us extremely well, it provides you with all the content online that you want to read/watch and can feed your biases. So many of us already are being controlled just by what we consume online and don't realize we are being manipulated, that is how manipulation works.

If a misaligned intelligence that is able to manipulate stupid people doesn’t terrify you then you aren’t thinking clearly.

Right now AI is actually pretty stupid itself but that is quickly changing. Imagine when we have an AI that is as smart as you or me.

If it's manipulating the stupid people... I have nothing to fear right now. We're all wary and watching what AI is doing, and how its learning so we ourselves are learning in the process to be aware of the rising threats it may develop.

While I know LiiW seems to think that piano teaching is going to be severely disrupted by AI by the year 2030 (which I doubt), because of the astronomical complexities involved in playing piano. Yes, it's not hard for computers to maybe analyse audio and matching it with scores, but the incredible infinitessimal differences that the human ear can hear between poorly voiced chords, slightly clunky semiquavers that a great teacher can discern and knowing exactly what each hand size, shape etc is capable of, and can assess the tips and tricks to facilitate the playing of difficult passages for each individual is something I doubt computers are going to be able to equal for 20 years.

You'd need a computer hooked up to a video camera capable of 120fps 4K imaging, and a top quality microphone capable of recording all the delicate nuances of the player, and have the AI analyse the physical movement of each finger SIMULTANEOUSLY and how the arms, wrists, elbows and shoulders move as well... IN REAL TIME???

No... don't see it happening anytime soon.

Your profession is a music teacher, it's why you are short sighted with the tech that is developing. Why not spend serious time with a top of the line PAID Ai model and you'll see. You think music teachers profession is safe from AI, you're demonstrating quite wishful thinking. In 5 years time what constitutes an effective top tier music teacher will certainly NOT be one that ignores the direct use of AI, without it you will become an old relic from the past, slow, inefficient, outdated.

You may have nothing to fear right now but that’s because the AI systems we have at the moment aren’t actually all that smart. But anyone who has been paying attention knows just how fast progress in AI is moving.
But even if it were true that you were able to stay ahead of AI forever (which I think is a little naive but could be true) it’s beside the point. It doesn’t matter if an AI is able to manipulate you or me personally, what you have to consider is the effect a poorly aligned AI can have on society. And it doesn’t even have to be that smart. Just look at what’s happening in the US at the moment thanks to a certain orange buffoon. Imagine something half as smart as Trump but working around the clock, everywhere in the world simultaneously, thousands of times faster than any single human ever could. And it doesn’t even have to be conscious or have malicious intentions. It could just have been trained in the wrong way or with the wrong data, or perhaps the people who made it had bad incentives.

On lostinidlewonder’s point, I kind of agree that it will likely be a while before any AI is able to replicate what a real human piano teacher can do, partly because there doesn’t seem to be any incentive for AI companies to focus on that area, but again I think you might be missing the point. It doesn’t matter if AI is better than humans. It only has to be good enough and cheap enough for people who know nothing about music to decide that that is their best option.
While I do think we’re safe for the time being, AI will be coming for our jobs eventually.

Oh.  I understand now.  What you are calling "AI" along with popular "journalists" is just the predictive LLM everyone with consciousness has noted and has been following for years.

Just a difference in terminology.

Not directed at anyone in particular, but has anyone involved in this "great debate" not been dropped on the head repeatedly as a small child?

These problems have been solved for about one and a half century.  Look it up.

What is your point though? Who says they are working with AGI? When you can feed say a json format of sheet music to a powerful model and it spits out fingering close to expert solutions what do you think about that? Given that last year it was a mere 10% accurate and today its more than 7x stronger. Go back 2 years it was junk. Yeah keep your head in that hole if it don't make you pay attention and realise its reasoning skill is becoming impressive. You can even get them to generate entire courses of any proficiency level and any topic and if processed through the lenses of a proper interface its incredibly powerful. Not something you're going to truly appreciate unless you're actually seeing it done.

When AGI comes then a vast amount more jobs will be doomed, I'm not even talking about that, the lesser AI still dooms our jobs especially those which are intellectual based.

I think you're also forgetting the developmental relationship people have with being taught by an actual person. You think people want to talk to a computer or tablet???

Also... AI isn't going to be cheap enough to undermine our jobs for a LONG time. While companies might try and aim to take our jobs - they'll be paying monstrous amounts of money for the training modules that teach AI and that cost is going to be passed down to the consumers.

In 5 years time what constitutes an effective top tier music teacher will certainly NOT be one that ignores the direct use of AI, without it you will become an old relic from the past, slow, inefficient, outdated.

People are already choosing to have relationships with chatbots. They can know you better than anyone else with enough data. Pay an AI 5c or a real human $5? The allure for an imperfect human wanes fast for the general public, look outside your own box to see that.

Also... AI isn't going to be cheap enough to undermine our jobs for a LONG time.
It's already done it wirh numerous jobs now.

While companies might try and aim to take our jobs - they'll be paying monstrous amounts of money for the training modules that teach AI and that cost is going to be passed down to the consumers.
This is illogical, it already has read all books on piano education and absorbed it and generated reasoning beyond it.

I GUARANTEE you I'll still have a full-time teaching job in 5 years... guarantee it.
Sure but the potential clients is shrinking exponentially, it will come to a critical point where if you don't use ai as a major tool for your product you'll become totally obsolete.

I mean you are like a farmer pre industrial revolution. Sure go plant your crops and harvest by hand while others whisk past you on tractors and mass production.

Yes... sad, sad, very lonely people. Don't use them as an example of a typical human being for goodness sake.

There are men out there who seemingly like to wear womens panties, and some wear bloody fursuits...

Don't use that small minority to claim that eventually the rest of the world will follow suit.

The allure for an imperfect human wanes fast for the general public, look outside your own box to see that.

I think you need to meet more people (and I mean in real life). You think the rest of society is going to eventually start chatting up AI bots in need of company?

it already has read all books on piano education and absorbed it and generated reasoning beyond it.

Yes, but it is still an artificial machine... how is it meant to understand feelings of tension in the human body when it doesn't have a human body. Just because I read the instruction manual of a plan doesn't mean I know how to fly it. I can read books on how to learn martial arts, but that doesn't mean I'll be able to properly apply the mechanics of with my own body, or to even teach it to someone else.

You seem to think it's so easy for a machine to teach someone how to play piano? Or are you just saying that because you have to peddle that Pianovision nonsense?

No offense - but it seems just as bad as Flowkey and SimplyPiano and all that other rubbish. I think you've not been a piano teacher for so long that you've stopped understanding the nuances and complexities of our profession... and sadly enough - I pity you.

Missing the point. The fact is that they can behave in such a way which humans approve of, they can be very understanding, have infinite patience and etc.

I think you need to meet more people (and I mean in real life).
Haha, well that assumption does make me laugh, Ive been on this earth longer than you and certainly have met more people than most I'd say.

You think the rest of society is going to eventually start chatting up AI bots in need of company?
They can embody a human form in a 3d space easily, wait till augmented reality glasses overtake mobile phones which is also on the horizon, you can have a real human form AI walking, standing, directing right next to you. Not to mention realistic human robots, heck it's going to be a giant industry.

Yes, but it is still an artificial machine... how is it meant to understand feelings of tension in the human body when it doesn't have a human body.
Are you claiming that teachers that teach remotely cannot identify and help this? You might have a whole wave of teachers disagreeing with you on that one.

Just because I read the instruction manual of a plan doesn't mean I know how to fly it. I can read books on how to learn martial arts, but that doesn't mean I'll be able to properly apply the mechanics of with my own body, or to even teach it to someone else.
Im not here to educate you, but it can make connections beyond the human knowledge, it can build upon and ponder, something quite profound that has become quite powerful recently and only will exponentially improve.

You seem to think it's so easy for a machine to teach someone how to play piano? Or are you just saying that because you have to peddle that Pianovision nonsense?
Now now, no need to let the professional jealousy show. You're slipping into personal attacks. We both know how that ends, you throwing a tantrum and saying, “I’m ignoring you now! Wahh wahhhh!”

No offense - but it seems just as bad as Flowkey and SimplyPiano and all that other rubbish. I think you've not been a piano teacher for so long that you've stopped understanding the nuances and complexities of our profession... and sadly enough - I pity you.
Lol im a more senior teacher than you, I have more qualifications, I have more experience, I have worked  more jobs in the field of music than you, so back in your shell. Which famous music teacher have you studied with? Oh just a WA university? lol ok... such a calibre. Yeah disparage SimplyPiano a billion dollar company, you keep earning your $80 bucks an hour, shhh shh its ok.

Are you claiming that teachers that teach remotely cannot identify and help this? You might have a whole wave of teachers disagreeing with you on that one.

Well, I did have to do remote teaching for a couple weeks during COVID and even a rare remote lesson for the year or two after and it definitely wasn't as advantageous as doing it in real life. Every piano teacher (and even instrumental teacher) I know has said the same.

WOW... the irony and hypocrisy is just staggering... me slipping into personal attacks? And what did I just quote above? Or is that you just being the condescending twat you usually are.

So what if SimplyPiano is a billion dollar company. Wealth isn't a good measure of character. Johnny Knoxville made millions in Jackass for having his balls hit with mallets and having sh*t sloshed all over him in a port-a-potty. Being rich doesn't mean you're brilliant. It means there are idiots that will pay for anything... much like PianoVision or SimplyPiano.

You don't even know me pal... you just believe you had more of this, more of that??? Really? Or does your ego feed off trying to be better than other people.

Haha, well that assumption does make me laugh, Ive been on this earth longer than you and certainly have met more people than most I'd say.

Again... doesn't mean sh*t. There are agorophobes out there who probably have been on this earth longer than you have as well, but they rarely step outside to see other people. Just because you're been alive longer doesn't mean a damn thing.

There's a reason I ignore people sometimes... Life is short. There are there are better things to do in life than waste it arguing with pedantic, delusional narcissists like yourself on the internet.

You can see tension and inefficient technqiue through the medium, so your point fails. Ai can easily observe photos and videos and make statements about technique in piano, likely better than most humans can as you admitted you found it hard.  Your experience is not ubiquitous, you fail to understand that the world is much larger than the little space you experience.

WOW... the irony and hypocrisy is just staggering... me slipping into personal attacks? And what did I just quote above? Or is that you just being the condescending twat you usually are.
Oh gosh poor illogical perfect pitch. I'm merely reflecting the tone you introduce, want to make it personal ok let's go, that’s why I said what I said, and your classic crying about it is typical of your behaviour. Don't start to make things personal and it won't go there, start it and we can go there, but you know who is going to cry and say I'm not talking to you no more! Wait why are you talking with me lol I thought you said you were going to ignore me? Lol

So what if SimplyPiano is a billion dollar company. Wealth isn't a good measure of character. Lol yes professional jealousy is what you are demonstrating. These apps help MILLIONS of people connect with piano and what about you? Sorry you are trying to fight an utterly losing battle here but watching you try to squirm out of it is very amusing do continue. The fact that you disparage a system which helps millions connect to learning piano and experiencing creativity shows your elitism and gatekeeping to the creative process. If it's not done your way it must be inferior, it shows how insecure you are and how bitter your are professionally. There's a saying, successful people want others to be successful, failures want others to fail. Your critique of ultra successful apps shows the type of person you are. You count your pennies and meagre influence in the music world while others make sweeping changes.

You don't even know me pal... you just believe you had more of this, more of that??? Really? Or does your ego feed off trying to be better than other people.
You started saying I should meet more people irl, you stated by saying I've forgotten nuances of piano education and etc etc. Now you're butthurt I've pointed out otherwise. Oh yes poor pp, the victim of my undeniable logic, here's a tissue for your tears.

Again... doesn't mean sh*t. There are agorophobes out there who probably have been on this earth longer than you have as well, but they rarely step outside to see other people. Just because you're been alive longer doesn't mean a damn thing.
Well I started teaching piano at the age of 13. I've lived longer, met more people, have more experience than you, it just makes your point about me not meeting enough people and not teaching long enough utterly hilarious. See what happens when you try to make guesses of people? You get the truth shoved in your face and lose. Try to debate the issue not the person because you have no idea about me, you're guesses are quite embarrassing and off the mark, but that's just your elitist attitude shining through, it's all you have to hold onto. Sorry but your sense of superiority doesn't make me cower, it makes me more interested in dissecting your irrational comments.

There's a reason I ignore people sometimes... Life is short. There are there are better things to do in life than waste it arguing with pedantic, delusional narcissists like yourself on the internet.
Yeah you said you have many people in your life like that right? I wonder where the problem lies, maybe its a you problem? Gosh imagine that! Lol

Robert "Bobby" Blake is much better than Phil Spector.

Phil Spector was a stupid jerk and he was really running everybody amok.

I didn't say it was right... but civilisations have been doing that for thousands of years.

That's history for you... War unfortunately forced many people to build bigger and better guns.

The problem isn't with me - it's with human nature. I didn't say it was 'good'... I just said it's happened.
By saying that it was "Darwinism" you literally said that "the superior ethnicity" won.
...Describing white people as "the superior ethnicity."

I have copied Siberian Husky's "Bunny" into my signature to aid his quest for world domination. Now you must do the same.
Now why can't I make this Courier New font...

No... I said the stronger race won... I can even repost the quote:

The stronger race won...

I didn't say superior, nor did I even imply it... they had superior weaponry but that I never said superior, or better - I said stronger. Maybe read what is actually said.

Yeah, but limeys drink a lot of tea and eat a lot of Marmite.

Inferior culture.

They also killed a lot of injuns.

French did not.

No... but the French eat slimy little molluscs and many other 'wonderful' things that most normal humans wouldn't dare to eat.

And marmite tastes like barf, so they don't know any better. Gotta admit, They're still a rather mighty superpower for their size. Only 65 million people, but they get usually get sh!t done.

Maybe back in the day.

What's the color of the boathouse at Hereford?

Yup.

And therefore have unique powers of seduction to the fairer sex.

Eat a lot of things and play a lot of piano.

Fingers and mouth makes up for a lot, especially at an advanced age.

Oh please - they only seem seductive because some people like accents - whether they're French, African or British. Heck - a lovely woman with a British accent is seductive. Don't care much about the French accent.

And I don't think the French play a lot of piano. The Chinese however have about 10% of the population taking up piano or violin lessons... that's a lot of piano.

Good to know.

I thought they did.

I thought they did.

Maybe in the 19th and very early part of the 20th century... but not really anymore. I mean no more than most other countries in the world (US, UK etc...)

As I said - it's the Chinese who are massively getting into piano.
