Lol. 10 seconds, with loud crying maybe then.

He can't help himself.

He's sensitive.

But also rugged.  Whisky and firearms and.

A regular world-beater if ever I saw one.

Why that boy there is the regular champion of the pianoforte.

He can eat him some fifty eggs, and ten chocolate bars in fifteen minutes.

Yeah, that seems to be the way for younger kids.

Not meaning to insult you, but, hey, anyone younger than me is a kid.

I've never understood that fascination among neophytes, even when I was that age.

Sure, I played Liszt, Brahms, Beethoven, Chopin, like everybody else.  Still do, actually, but only pieces I agree with.  No, nobody forced me to learn any piece to "be at the top of one's class," but one requires a supple technique and so forth, so I did as my professor requested.  And, indeed, the competitive spirit existed at a young age for me, so I did my best to excel.

But my musical life would be null, and my technique would be even more defective if I hadn't developed an early aptitude for Bach and even much later composers like Rzewski.

From Bach and others I learned that the value in music is in the hard work and lessons it imparts.  To both the listener and the performer.

I got that from later Beethoven as well, of course --although Beethoven erred on the side of the burgeoning "concert pianist" mythos that was beginning already at his time -- I think Adorno had some fragment of an essay or book about that -- but Bach was the one who taught me that all the bravura effects in the world couldn't mask any musical, technical, or spiritual defect.

whats a good contemporary piece , for lrsm

One of Rzewski's "North American Ballads."  Good luck!  I did "Winnsboro Cotton Mill Blues" (I think is what it's called) at the age of twelve or fourteen or so.....probably one of the least mechanically demanding of that quartet, but it's difficult to play well.

I had a lot of trouble keeping time in Rzweski's "Down by the Riverside" from that same tetralogy, but already knowing the polyrhythms and the "grips" from Brahms's Op. 79/1 (the B minor Rhapsody) among many other pieces of Brahms helped a lot....a lot of "muscle memory" was still built up by then....it's still a difficult tune, thought, Rzweski's is...all four of the American Ballads are, frankly, difficult, but IMHO they require a bit more thought and care than trotting out some old warhorse from among the XIX century.

Also, Prokofiev Sonata 7.....I still can't get the rhythm of the fast movement ingrained, but it's not as difficult as it sounds....granted...it is difficult.....but the rest of the sonata is not especially demanding for a mechanic who knows how to play polyrhythms and have it sound musical.

That's still easier for me to play than some tired-out little Chopin etude....mostly because the music is good and doesn't have that retarded XIX century excess in it.  One needs a good bit of technique to play that or other pieces from the XX century, but if one plays at the keyboard, it's safe to assume one has done the standard little XIX century pieces of disposable junk that some people find "pretty."

Or do one of Ligeti's études.

Now... THAT... is ICONIC!!!

Damn right.

Make up an arrangement of that tune, with whatever stupid bravura flourishes one wishes, and the judges will be essing one's dee.

I didn't get from that dude if it was just a graded recital or a try-out for a program, or what.

Can't go wrong with that one, though.

I shouldn't think it wouldn't be appreciated by the judges listening to some turd playing yet again a Chopin study for the millionth time.  Or some of the Suite bergamesque, however great that music is.

Originality in programming should count for a great deal....provided one can play it.

Nobody needs or wants to hear one of Chopin's or Liszt's "studies" for the millionth time.

ACTUALLY...using the sostenuto pedal, holding down the bass, and mimicking the rootless guitar chord voicings with the LH (I think those are mostly m7,13 and m7,9 chords, but I don't have the perfect pitch) ....and playing the horn parts with the RH.....meh....it could be done on solo piano.

Sound a lot better than some jackwagon trotting out some obligatory trash from the garbage heap of "repertoire," IMHO.

I mean, the music is good... but lets be honest. It's the lyrics that make this song awesome. The instrumental score is okay, but would be boring to listen to on the piano.

What makes the music interesting is the different instrumentation. If you try and play all the parts on a piano - it just sounds a little mundane.

The piano isn't supposed to sound like just another piano....I'd go on about touch and feeling and expressivity, but I suppose it would fall on deaf ears.

You remember those little markings called "una corda" and "ppp" and "fff" and even sustain pedal markings?

If the performer isn't having fun with it, the audience won't have any fun.

But it doesn't have to be that way.

Who says one can't do both? Or even....gasp....wait for it....emulate a human voice at the keyboard piano.

Nope.

Have you seen me talk to my sister before?

Best not.

I mean, the music is good... but lets be honest. It's the lyrics that make this song awesome.

I don't know if you noticed, but the link I provided was to a purely instrumental arrangement.  No vx at all.

The music is simple, but piano is at least partly a percussion instrument.  And it's entirely possible to add an envelope filter/auto-wah to a microphone.

It could be done with one acoustic piano, a performer, a few microphones, and it should sound good.

The most "bravura" effect needed might be to step on the una corda pedal, and judiciously add some sustain pedal and run some of the horn parts in sixths or something.....I don't have perfect pitch or anything, but that could be a good sound.

Haven't you seen the piano talk before???

It's implied that the audience is already familiar with the tune.

Not dissimilar to performing a transcription of a piece from an opera, although these days it's not very likely children would understand the implications of such-and-such a performance.

Nope.  I said it was someone like that.

And Neil Peart was one of the most stunningly terrible drummers in all of music history.  Just a piece of S in all aspects....couldn't play jazz, couldn't play rock, could do absolutely nothing.

I make two drummers like him in the toilet every morning.

I would say "rock music" history, but that triad of dumbshites never recorded anything resembling rock music.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uYBce9Gsz7g

Well, at least you have good taste in music, I guess.  The cartoon version is better than the ghastly typical performance of Rossini.

I wouldn't play that one by choice, but even my tone-deaf ears can do that from memory.....it's a horrific offense to music.

But it's got a beat and the kids can dance to it, or whatever they do!

And I must emphasize that that is a very clever bit of animation, so well done for doing that.  Made me laugh, anyway, and I thank you for that.

Imagine trying to conduct or even perform that in front a live audience.....that's a kind of concentration that is incredible to me, and although I don't have LIIW's credentials, I've spent my time on the stage in all kinds of venues, from hostile to violent.

I've got no idea.....classic narcissist artist type here....generally only notice things when it's about me or some topic I can geek out on.

I'm sure a person of your....calibre....can relate to that very well.

If I had to guess, click-throughs for the site are more valuable for the owner than valuable content....probably the reason this damned thread has been going on for so long!

But, in pianostreet's favor, there are very few places online where one can discuss performance practices, technology of recording and live sound, manuscript authenticity, and such.....it's a pretty good signal to noise ratio here, although it's been probably a decade since I've had much to say about actual music.

So, I wouldn't really know what spammers, trolls, or socks are doing so much here, but it's hardly some cesspool like reddit or that other place....as far as I know.

I could do without all the children, but I play "classical music" at the pianoforte....it's inherently an old person's game, really!

Yes, but I think if people are going to sign up to ask genuine questions - waiting a day wouldn't be the worst thing if they are thinking of being a member of this community and seeking the answers they need.

Instead - we've had over 30 spam posts in just a single day (by my count), and they seem to be multiplying the more they know they can get away with it.

I'm not reporting them anymore. I've told nils my idea about what could potentially curb the behaviour. He doesn't want to do it... let the spamming begin.

How do you say in English, "One is coming one's face and hair for the win"?

I'm not sure how the expression is for in English of the languages, but it must be for to have there similar ideas in different language but yet similar ideas.

And talk about movies???

WTH do you know about movies made before the Year 2000?

But true trivia fact....I have heard that the drummer for Conan's (yes, I know you're not American nor even norteamericano, but he used to be a big star....sort of like Jools Holland in the UK, but less able) show is a ginormous tool.

But back to your point about making instrumental versions of tunes where the lyrics are (or are expected to be) understood by the audience.

For example, I can play this on piano (actually, I'd like Hammond organ on top of an acoustic piano for this one)....and sell it to the crowd (of lol what a dozen or so people....hey, it's not always about the size!)

It's not about being able to come up with a little arrangement, but as a performer, particularly as a soloist, being able to sell it to the audience.

Very literally....I mean....we're performers, right?

I've done the same with hundreds of tunes, often with just acoustic piano.....that one-chord Allen Toussaint tune, "Yes We Can" is an example....as are so many others.....

It just is a matter of knowing what the audience is familiar with, and catering to that.

No, I've never pandered to the crowd....I play tunes I like and that have meaning for me, or that coincidentally form an easy segue, or can form a thematic bridge while improvising a set.

Hey, if the audience doesn't like it, they can always leave, you know?
