During a recent visit to South Bank Centre in London to find out more about “double action” pianos, Piano Street’s Patrick Jovell had a chance to speak with the in-house piano technician Peter Salisbury about the current situation on the concert grand piano market. Read more >>

I was listening to a piece of music on the radio.  Classical.

Then... "Hi, this is your announcer at this performance.  Your listening to so and so play Piece X by so and so...."

So grr to that.

But then later....  The music stops.  Silence.  I know the piece.  The pause isn't that long.  What's going on?  Technical difficulties?   "...Hi, friends.  Have you decided who you're going to vote for?  We'll let me tell about candidate X...."  They went to commercials in the middle of a piece on a classical station.  Darn them.

Nothing now.  Finally.  Freaked me out for a second there.

Middle of the night... I hear some music.  Sounds vaguely familiar.  Quiet, distant.  I fell back asleep.

Woke up in the morning.  Same thing.  Shook my head, made sure I was awake.  I was.  For sure I was hearing music.  Couldn't tell where it was coming from despite moving around the room, listening.  The music faded before I found anything.

And then again.  This time I finally discovered a little music player I left charging.  Headphones had popped out.  Every once in a while it was playing music.  Something's a little off with it and it acts up sometimes.  That was getting bizarre though.

Then again, having music play only in your mind now and then might not be so bad.

I started with disc 2. These are not her early DG recordings--they are from 1960 when she was 18 and were recorded by the North German Radio. The sound is mono but actually is quite decent. Besides, nothing could dim the brilliance of her playing, especially the blowtorch intensity of the last movement of Prokofiev's 7th Sonata. Perhaps too fast for every line to clearly come across, but lordy...

A few minutes ago, just listening to Argerich playing the G-major prelude of Chopin.

Seemed kind of appropriate for a cloudy, rainy Sunday morning.

And it only mildly offends me that her LH is smoother and faster than mine.

Eh, she's old, I'll let her win that round.
