Cool dream.  I had unlimited speed and good control on the piano.  I dreamt I was playing through some pieces with fingers flying.  That's what I noticed after the dream.  During the dream I was just into the music.  Very cool.

We were soooo bad at music theory today  ::) specially with dictations  ::) I know I was really confused  :-\ and I got one whole bar wrong!  :o :-[  ::) (I don't think that ever happened too me before!) oh well... I don't know why that was but we were learning A major and then we had a dictation for the first time in A major and then one bar was too high to sing and the teacher said we should sing it one octave lower and I just got really confused  ::) well I was just really confused anyway the whole time even when we were just checking the homework I was saying names of the notes wrong all the time!  >:(  ::) ... I really hope I will be better next time!!!

I could see A major being too high and too low for people.

It's not wise to "chug a little" from those little baking flavoring bottle really quickly, esp. if it has an "easy to pour" lid.   :o :-X :P :-\

Not that I know of course.

I almost forgot.... Amusing quick story.

Today I used I tried out a piano at a different place.  I dropped something and couldn't find it, so I was looking all around.  I pulled the piano bench back and thought I would tilt the bench lid up in case what I was looking for was on the bench and would slide off.  What I was looking for was clear and small.  Easily missed.  (And I did find it eventually.)  So I tilted the piano bench lid up....

What do I see?

A condom.  Thank God it was still in a wrapper.  Yuck.  Some people, guys I guess, must be very safe about their piano practice.

Kid shoots his mother.  Two sisters see him.  The 911 recording has him saying he shot his mother.  His plea?  Not guilty.   ::)

Not that anyone should expect him to be rational.

Ok well... so this music theory is becoming a disaster!!!  :-\  >:(  :( I don't know why but last three times we had music theory our dictations were horrible!!! We all make sooo many mistakes that the teacher even says to some that she won't even correct it because there's just too many mistakes..... well I don't know about others but it's just too fast for me!! I just get lost and I can't even write notes that fast and then I'm changing and correcting things from before and I miss the new things and I get REALLY confused and so it's just a mess in the end  ::) ... just bad!!! and I was sooo happy already because in November and December I got all dictations (about 4 or 5) completely right without any mistakes!!! And now last three times it's been just horrible every time worse!!! Just a disaster!!! I'm not doing this music theory exam this year!  :-\
Oh well  ::)

Don't worry too much about ear training.  That stuff ramps up steeply pretty quick.  Just revisit it later if you can.  I remember even the vocalists who were whizzes with ear training in my classes eventually started struggling at some point when the difficulty kept increasing.

One trick I learned was to use whatever material was being focused on in that section.  It's not learning anything, more survival.  You don't have to hear it, but you can write something correctly and on topic and get some credit that way.

When I studied (back in the dark ages) there was no "ear training." When I see it written about here I wonder what is the purpose of the training. Sometimes I think it is just to fill out an academic package.

It's learning to hear and sing back the things you learn in theory.  I found it very useful, although I don't think my teachers had everything lined up quite right.

Thanks Bob :) Well but I kinda have to worry about it because it's 80% of the grade  :-\ so it's really important! I really have to start practicing it somehow!! And then I'll see if I can get any better at it!

I guess you are a very nice person and you love to do things for others, like for instance this translation. It's good, I mean, you are very idealistic and you are a loving person. But you can get very easily distracted from your own stuff, through thousands of additional "jobs" that people "require" from you or that you like yourself but actually you get overwhelmed. I mean, please you are 12 and you are at school, and you need to do your job there and you need your piano practice time and your practice time for music theory and not thousands of additional obligations which you just accept because you feel like "omg this person wants that from me, now I need to do it"..

You know, one lesson I learned from life is this: people can easily make you do their job. But they will never do your job. Because it's only you who can do it.

So, learning to say no is very important.

And now it's like I like doing all things more than doing things for school! Even if it's something difficult like this translation... Ooooh well....... :)

I'm thinking about the auction I just went to with my family. One of the dudes there spoke in the key of B major! ._O I was like. Srsly. Need to get a life now. DARNIT ! WHY MUST MUSIC FOLLOW ME EVERYWHERE?!  ;D  I think his crazy voice is still rambling around inside my head... :P

Now I'm wondering- how on earth do those guys talk so fast? One of life's many mysteries I suppose. ::)

They work at it, hours on end. I think the auctioneer would chant in a minor key to build tension. Next time you go, bring a pitch pipe. For years I never left home without one.

BTW, how are you healing up, Birba? Hope all is well!

No big mystery. I graduated from Occidental College in 1960 and was a member of the Phi Mu Alpha music fraternity. I chose oxy60 rather than my fraternity60 because people might recognize it easier. On such a worldwide forum as this there just might be another music major from my school.

Don't rush your recovery and be glad you chose a sit down instrument.

1) Why I'm the only person on my team at work today (it snowed heavily over NYC and everyone called out.) However, being as I live in Manhattan, everyone assumed I can't have commute issues.

2) If I'm really going to get better at the piano. I'm 25, and didn't play between ages 13 - 23, so I lost a lot of ground. All the famous pianists started at like 8 and played non-stop since. Am I wasting my time? Is it too late for me to catch up? Will I EVER play La Campanella?

3) Its Thursday...what bar/club to go to tonight? Thursday is like one giant pre-game for the weekend ahead. I shant waste it.

4) Its 12:06...whats for lunch?

I guess... It's a masters so it's topping off another music degree that way.  A focus in popular music.  Being that specific with a musi group sounds like a stretch though.  You could get a degree in the London Symphony or New York Phil.
