No you are not alone. Generally I notice among my friends that there is one member of the family who knows how to run the computer. And that is the one who is usually on these forums. If something happens to that person, (it could even be a bad case of the flu), then there could be no one else who even knows which forums, etc.

Anyway Happy Thanksgiving to those who celebrate it. It may be worth a note that Thanksgiving is being taught in grade school in Spain! We had to explain it to a parent just the other day. Also Halloween was also celebrated, not by trick or treat but by adults in costume in bars!

We feel that America is coming to Spain.

My mind is definitely on the turkey I will be devouring today.

And it is also on the aftermath of that aforementioned feast.

Oh lord.

I was just thinking of the nature of these internet forums and lists and how we don't really know each other. Specifically, we care about each others well being, but if one of us were to get ill or die suddenly, we might not ever know about it. How would we? It's a morbid thought, but it's unlikely everyone who has been registered with this site is still living. I was thinking about this because of the disappearance of a solid contributor on a group I belong too. There have been occasions where illness has been made known by a family member, or a case I remember of the death of a man very dear to a certain email list I'm on (such lists are generally more involving as far as personal information)...but the nature of these boards, or at least my approach has been purposefully more hidden. I was even afraid to join and contribute at first because for some reason I was afraid somebody (among the small amount of people I know) would recognize me! Do you ever think these things or am I just in left field?

(Sorry, I know it's thanksgiving...not a thankful subject!)

Yes I'm thinking about that too!  :(

I think it's great that a  beginner's book is preparing you for what you might encounter in the future!
Yes it's cool!  8) I hope my teacher will tell me how you're supposed to play that :) but it's at the end of the book so it won't be so soon.

Yesterday I started practicing one piece first time with a pedal and it was sooo weird! Every time when I lifted my foot to release the pedal I lifted my right hand too  :-\ even though I was supposed to hold the note  ::) It was like my brain just thought my hand and my foot were the same thing!  :o and I was worried I would never learn that.... but today it was A LOT better already :) so I hope it will be ok cause I'm supposed to play that piece for Christmas recital!  :)  :P  :)

Yes, Furtwaengler, I've had the same thoughts too about members who might get seriously ill or die.

Anyway. . . Happy Thanksgiving! :)

That reminds me of the time I learned how to play loud with the right hand and soft with the left.  It was hard!  Like patting your head and rubbing your stomach at the same time!  ;D

Hey Bob, what kind of Spanish do you want to learn; Mexican, South American, Spain Spanish? While you're at it you should probably learn the co-official language of the region you plan to visit.

As an introduction you might get a copy of some poems by Lorca. The is a book out there with the original Spanish on one page and an English translation on the other.

Glad to see you are back on the board. We were a little concerned..

Everybody is saying this will be a very cold winter in Europe. The other night I saw my first snowflake icon on my car thermometer! No real snowflakes yet but before they start to fall I will be back in Southern California hanging Christmas lights on Camellia Bushes.

It's probably Mexican Spanish, although I think I'd rather go for Spain Spanish since it's more European.  I'm thinking in terms of practiality.  I'm not travelling so it's whatever would be practical in the U.S.  Probably "textbook" Spanish... which I'm guessing is more Mexican or just "plain" Spanish with some regional things thrown in.

Good to know a little.  Good thing to have on the resume.

Good choice. Very melodic, very expressive and spoken a lot slower than what you encounter in Spain. If you can receive Univision you check out the sound. Some cable companies in the US have a Latino package which in your case would be essential to get the pronunciation right.

It's just being practical.  For practical, Mexican.  For music, I guess it's Spanish -- Are there any big Mexican composers?  Spanish yes I think.  I'm not sure now... Hmm.... Are they Spain-Spanish or Latin American?

The two are not that different. The main difference is that to a Mexican a Spanish person sounds like a teenager "over hyped." To a Spanish person Castro sounds asleep. There are some noun differences based on local usage but coverage of South American news events is handled without subtitles. Contrarily the Catalan election campaign required subtitles here in Spain.

You won't go wrong checking out your local Spanish TV channel.

Putting a language on your CV may sound like a good idea. Remember, you may be required to sit down and have a chat with a native speaker.

It could have been correct before.  It's just a clef.  It points to F.  That lower line was F.

Neither the treble or bass clefs are movable on the staff. If you wish to write music with a movable clef one would use the alto clef which points to middle C. However, in over half a century of playing orchestral instruments I have never seen the alto clef in any position other than pointing to C on the middle line.

Over in the french horn section they do some tricky things reading non transposed parts by penciling in the alto clef on various lines. That was too comlicated for me..

One aspect about Europe is that issues are never clear. There are anarchists is every country waiting to confront the police. They pop up at the almost every protest. They are lurking on every forum. If someone could tell me what they want, other than a total lack of authority and civility I would be happy to listen. But like the winter snow they melt away when confronted with hard questions. I doubt the eggs thrown at the car had anything to do with any issue other than to throw eggs at the Prince.

Oxy's right.  I can tell you from experience.  I was a participant in the riots of 68 UNTIL I saw at EVERY demonstration, people who instigated the demonstrators passing them bottle molotovs, paint, rocks, etc. etc. and look, oh, gee, I wonder why, their faces covered with scarves and irrecognizable.  They are the ones who are rioting for rioting's sake and looking for anarchy.

Yeah, like an air-tight bubble!  :o  Although that is the land of timothy leary.  1968 was the beginning of world-wide protests on problems pertinent to all countries.  Workers' conditions, student protests, homosexual rights, war demonstrations, you name it.  But like I said, you would find the same instigators in all these protests.  The trouble makers who couldn't have cared less about WHY they were throwing the molotov bomb.

Hi Birba!!! How are you? I have been thinking about you! :) I hope you're ok!!!
Thank you littletune!  Yes, it went VERY well.  It's just now I'm pretty much layed up at home for a month or two and then 3 or 4 months of crutches.  After that I'm hoping I can throw them away forever.  YEA!!!!!!!!!!!!  There's pain but I have my faithful Oxycontins for that.   ;D
