Everybody should. At least recognize the styles. I don't know all the masterpieces but at least I can spot the style. There are still a lot pieces in private collections.

Years ago we were cleaning out an attic and came across a small painting which was done very well.  We didn't recognize the artist but because it was so good we took it for a free appraisal. They put it up at auction and we put a couple of bucks into our pocket.

I know what you mean, I can usually identify the style but not necessarily the name.

That's really interesting! I've always wanted to find a painting in my attic or something.

I'm stunned! Where did everybody go to school? Is it the case these days that recognizing a masterpiece is not taught? There aren't that many great artists in the top tier.

Art history (just like poetry) is not one of the subjects that is thought much in in school here. One would only know about such masterpieces if one is interested or has studied art history in the university. In general our basic education is much more about natural science, math and languages than arts. They do at least still teach music, but the hours are declining because only "hard" science is considered that important...

I do know at least some paintings and painters, but that one does not ring a bell...please enlighten me :)

Having gone to a liberal arts school, they require a certain amount of classes in each discipline before you specialize in your major.  Art is a broad topic including music, graphic design, painting, printmaking, woodwork etc.  I took "intro to music" (lol) for my art requirement and needed nothing else.  The only people who took the actual art history class were the people who were great at memorizing, as that was basically all the class was.  I bet most people could recognize The Mona Lisa or Starry Night or other extremely famous ones. I'm sure most people could look at two pieces and be able to recognize they are of a similar time period or style, but naming that style is completely different. Knowing the different periods of art is like asking non-musicians to know all the eras of music from medieval to EDM.

In regards to primary education, I can barely remember some of the math that I almost never use, let alone information in subjects I didn't really care for.  Everyone has their interests.  I'm sure many people would scoff at me for not being able to name a single Robert Frost poem.  Similarly, I'd laugh in someone's face if they didn't know the Pythagorean theorem.

To each their own.

EDIT: I believe most people can recognize the major works due to popular media, not from being taught.  Although I'm sure it was taught to me, I don't remember ever seeing the Mona Lisa in a classroom.  Schooling is probably irrelevant in regards to major works.  Similarly, every idiot can recognize Beethoven's 5th without actually having any interest or having been taught in school.

Seems excessive, but I can see why it may be necessary.

It just means the document has to be legalized by a notary/lawyer.

In my age much of what I have known some day is already forgotten... and I am definitely an idiot, since I never remember the names/numbers of classical pieces...especially the ones I don't care for... probably couldn't tell 5th from 9th really ;D

I usually recognize the composer and remember some parts of the piece, but that's it.

How many pieces of music are there in the world? I'd bet there are quite a few that start with similar rhythm... And well known is relative... You'd need to narrow it down quite a bit before I'd even try :)

I wasn't expecting an answer...

The piece I meant was Winter Wind Etude, left hand melody.

I actually immediately thought of that piece, but the latter half didn't seem correct?

They should definitely do something about this right to bear arms bullshit.

What the freaking heck do you need a freaking gun in your house for?

Why do I need a gun in my house? Because people rob houses.

Why do I want a concealed carry? Because women get raped.

It's as simple as that. It's protection from criminals and rapists. If a robber comes into my house, I don't want to have to wait for the police to come. I want to take care of the situation before he kills me, any of my family, or steals my stuff.

I'd rather pull a gun out of my purse when a rapist comes after me than run off in another direction or hide behind a trash bin while he comes after me while I wait for the police to come help me, if I was even in a place where I could get signal strength.

Taking the guns away doesn't help protect you. It leaves you, your family, and your women more vulnerable to crime.

Yes, there are nuts that get ahold of guns and go crazy. But we need to blame the people, not the guns. People need to take responsibility for their actions, and we need to MAKE them take responsibility for it, not blame guns.

People say we don't need guns to protect ourselves. Then tell me, why is our President protected by guns? Why does he need so many body guards carrying guns? I'll tell you. If one person tries to attack our President, guaranteed, he will be dead by a gunshot within seconds. Guns protect. Otherwise our president wouldn't be protected by guns. If our President's family is protected by guns, and it's okay for him to protect his family with guns, why isn't it okay for US, to protect OUR families with guns from people who would try to harm us?

If you ban guns, criminals don't follow laws. They WILL find guns, and they will NOT hesitate to use them. This is the nature of criminals. They break laws, and find ways to break them. When a criminal comes into my house with a gun and points it at MY family, I want more than a knife or baseball bat to defend myself and my family with. If my President can protect his family from criminals, with guns, I should be able to also.

People are constantly blaming guns for the horrible shootings that happened. When 9/11 happened, we didn't blame the planes and try to ban jets and helicopters. We blamed the terrorists for the horrible thing that they did to us. It's the same thing with guns. We need to make the people take responsibility for it, just like we did the terrorists. The people that go into schools and shoot little children are no different than those terrorists. They're just as responsible for their actions as the people that flew the jets into the Twin Towers, killing fellow Americans.

Take my gun, I have a knife. Take my knife, I have bats. Take my bats, I have scissors. Take my scissors, I have rocks.

Taking guns won't solve it. There'll just be other ways for psychos and criminals to do it.

Sorry, I read that wrong before. Yes, things happen that can't be avoided. I probably shouldnt have said guaranteed. Guns keep us safer. If they didn't, why would our President be protected by them? Why is the royalty of England protected by them? Why is royalty of SO many other countries protected by them? It is guaranteed, though, that the assassin CAN be shot within seconds. And that is why bodyguards carry guns. They have the ability to kill an assassin BEFORE he kills the important people they guard. They are protected by them. Therefore, we, as body guards of OUR families should be able to use them to protect our families, and ourselves. Politicians and people should realize that we have just as much right to protect our families as the President has to protect his. We should have just as much right to protect ourselves and families from criminals as he does his.

I could see changing the amount of bullets that can get sprayed out.  Maybe that's the line that will change.  Even with slower firing guns, there would be enough to make a statement against the government if the government was trying to take things over.  And the government could already outgun everyone as it is if they wanted to.

That, something improved with mental health care abilities, and then possibly I could see something with security guards in schools.  You've got at them at the airports, in stadiums, at malls... I wasn't originally thinking it was practical, but if they can do that, why not schools too?  That would have to be one of the dullest jobs though.  99.999% of the time nothing is going to happen and they won't be doing much except "being present."  Unless they became professional, armed, playground supervisors/bus monitors.  That I could see too.

They'd just carry more mags and guns with them. Or get illegal magazines, which they will, because, of course, they're criminals, so that's not a problem for them.

Security guards in schools? GENIUS. Maybe dull, but it'd certainly keep the schools safe. The NRA had it right there.

If in that leftover piece of a percent, we can keep so many children from being killed, its worth it. Being present is all it takes.

It would just make it more difficult.  The Conn kid wouldn't have had the legal guns he had.  I guess it would have been fewer kids killed.  He still could have killed his mother and a few kids.  I don't know the details of the guns though, if it can spray bullets.

Why then have more US Presidents been assasinated than leaders of any other democracy in the last 50 or 100 years?

Incidentally, do you believe the second amendment right to bear arms protects your (individual) right to own nuclear weapons? If not, why not?

Peoples houses get robbed because they are carless.  Maybe next time if you actually installed an alarm system, and don't leave your garage door open, or leave the keys under the mattress outside, or let your five year old child answer the door,  then your house won't get robbed.  Besides, most robberies aren't armed robberies.  I think...

Contrary to popular belief, almost all rapes don't happen when you're walking home in a dark ally.  They typically happen in the safest of places/situations.  So even if you do happen to own a gun, it's not going to do you any good because you probably won't have it on you anyways.

Now keep in mind I'm not saying it's the victims fault, nor am I justifying rape or robbery in any way.  I'm just saying that if people actually do this moron thing called...  THINKING!!! :P  Then they can prevent tragedies from happening.

9/11 happened because of bad airport security.  The same thing with the Connecticut shooting.  All of those kids died because loose gun laws.

Sure, if I take away your guns, you may have knives, but you're not going to kill 20 people in a school with just a knife.

Working on that one---

That's a bit of a stretch, j_menz, and I'm sure even you realize that. "Bear arms" is referring to guns, not nuclear weapons. Nuclear bombs, and bombs are weapons of mass destruction. A nuclear bomb, or bomb is used solely for the destruction of things. There is no reason to own a bomb, unless you plan to needlessly destroy something. A bomb is not a mode of protection for a U.S. citizen. Unless you plan to blow you and your neighborhood up to get a robber out of your house, or blow a street/city off the face of the earth to get rid of a rapist.

Guns are not solely used for destruction. infact, the  self defense uses for guns ranges from 65,000 times a year, to 2.5 million times per year. (I'm sure Rachmaninoff_forever would like to know that after his last post)

Now tell me, how many times have you seen a bomb in the U.S. used in self defense, and then maybe you can explain to me why the second amendment doesn't give us the right to own nuclear weapons.

Interesting, you jumped from a conversation about guns, to a conversation about weapons we only use in war against other countries. The two aren't even equivalent.

So maybe a tank instead? Or a howitzer? My own drone for a bit of that pre-emptive defence?

I also thought that the second amendment justified the right to own and bear arms not on individual defence, but rather that a "well regulated militia" was necessary for the security of a free state.  Do you give any weight to the words "well regulated"?

Does anyone have Halo 4?  Add me, my gamertag is House Atredis.

So ANYWAYS...

I was freaking playing capture the flag right?  We won, but some guy on the other teams kill death ratio was freaki- Oh I can't say that anymore... 48 and 4!!!!!!!!!!  WHAT THE HE- oh that's right, I can't say that anymore either...  He absolutely DESTROYED us!!!

Because of him my kill death ratio was...
...
...
FLIPPING  Hahaha, I didn't say...  You know what.

8 and 21!!!  NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I went waaaaaaaaaaaay negative!!!

Clearly all those articles warning how too much gaming corrupts/rots young minds should be taken more seriously than I had hithertofore believed.

Merely your grammar?  :P

Incidentally, you're doing well on the NY resolution, though the strain is showing.

Okay.  Time for a RESET.  Dump the video games.  Kid stuff.  No.  Worse than that.  The violence that is called gaming is corrosive.  It numbs you and dumbs you.  It leads you, unconsciously, to rationalize that "killing," virtually speaking, is a game.  That's sophistry.  In short, that's crap.  "Killing" is never a game.  When it becomes a "game," it's conditioning people to accept behavior that goes beyond any acceptable norm in any civilized society.

You're a pianist.  If you want to know what killing (war) does to cultures, then learn the Prokofiev Sixth, Seventh or Eighth sonatas.  This, Prokokfiev went to much trouble to say, is the legacy of killing.

Divert your energies there.  Dump the a-hole video games.  Practice even more.  Get into a good conservatory.  Something you deserve.

I get what you're saing, but I'm not going to kill anyone.

I would practice now, but I'm not allowed to because my parents are a-holes and they make up lies saying that it disturbs the neighbors.  I know they're lies because I've talked to the neibors about this and they don't have a problem.  And it's too cold in the house...  No heat.

Why not? I'll make sure my replacement is much nobler than me.

I'll pick j_menz, and ensure he will continue tormenting you until the end of times.

Fry tones?  I'll have to listen for this.  Haha.  I know a few women who do this.  I didn't know there was a term for it.
