perfect pitch would call it a lazy excuse to add extra posts. Now I'm doing that for perfect pitch

Oh look - I found the ignore list. Now I can just ignore the ramblings from liszt-and-the-galops and just move on with the thread.

Hows the Mazeppa coming along???    ;D

Maybe if you spent a lot less time posting dictionary words, you'd be closer to completing it.     ;D

He's learning Tristesse.

I must admit, that's quite an undertaking, after finishing Fur Elise and the Raindrop Prelude a month ago. I'd say the same leap for me, Fur Elise to Moonlight 3rd, literally took like 2 years. So to get there in one month is really impressive...

I'd like to see an audition room recording from you, liszt and the galops. I wonder if you can play the FI and Tristesse well! If you can learn pieces well at this rate you might even be at Galop in A Minor in 15 years

Yeah... there's a difference between playing the Raindrop prelude and 'performing' the Raindrop prelude.

It's a tough piece with a lot of nuance.

So you're saying my method of playing it fortissimo in strict time along to a click track is sus?

Db is too hard, also, so I play it in C.  Sounds better that way.

Have you seen my audition room recordings? I did not use anything special, just a dumb unresponsive internal Thinkpad recorder.

At least no one has complained about the poor audio quality yet. Give it a run, I'd love to hear how you play.

Probably, right?

Yes, it is.  It plays in Peoria, and it's good fun, besides.

I'd personally start a young blues piano player in Db than in C, but that's life.

I just start with whatever key comes into my head when I can be arsed putting my fingers on the keyboard.

I've had many fun times starting in random keys with massed choirs.     ;D

Yeah, that sounds about right.  It's been a dog's age since I had any student who dared to enter my house of ignominy.

But that's about the approach I'd take when demonstrating something improvised.  Demonstrates that a good musician (even including pianists) should be able to play anything in any key.

Granted, some keys are more comfortable for doing certain idiomatic things, but still, with proper technique, anything can be done.

If playing music were supposed to be "comfortable" and "easy," it would be called "play" instead of "work."  Or, er, whatever.

I've had many fun times starting in random keys with massed choirs.     ;D

Yeah, I bet.

My preferred way of messing with vocalists is to ask them "what key do you want?" or anything remotely technical about music.

This is the usual response:

Really??? That's not very mischievous... I like asking what key they like and then playing it a semitone higher just to *** with them.    ;D

Lets see how they like 'em high notes now.

Too mean!

If one wants to shut them up, just put a piece of staff paper in front of them and count off 300 bpm, then say "In Ab!"

I know actual singers or musicians can and will do this all day.  Just talking about the "musician" type "singers" who don't have their nothing together except maybe carry a tune, or fill out a dress, at best.

The best are the ones who know neither the key nor the meter of the tunes, and who also complain that you're not "helping" them by playing the melody on top and are playing those funny chords.

I like asking what key they like and then playing it a semitone higher just to *** with them

Actually, that's brilliant.  Except 80% of the time one of those "musician" singers will look at your hands and complain a bunch.

That is a point in favor of guitar or some other string instrument one cannot easily "read" by a quick glance, b/c of alternate tunings and so many ways to find the root of a chord, e.g., all over the fingerboard.

Hell no - singers are too trusting and usually assume that what the accompanist does was correct.

Good!  Perfect opportunity to mess with them!

I still submit that they will complain about those "funny sounding chords you're playing....where's the melody?"

Or complain about something else!  Srsly!  I find singers (especially "jazz" singers) think they know absolutely everything....they "trust" only in their own inflated egos.

Truth to power:  I ain't playing the melody, you twit!  That's literally the only thing you have to do as a singer!

That and maybe not randomly changing time signatures every other measure.  That would be nice if they could play time....you know, like a musician!

Abandon all hope if you expect them to know their key or have any leadsheets...or even bring their own microphone (much less a preamp that complements their mic and voice)!  99% of the time, not happening!

OK.  That's messed up.  what is wrong with you and why did you ever "need" (or "were ordered to") to see that video? ;D

However, it's fair, since there are children....and I might add, loud and boisterous children....skulking about.

Don't enter the van, kids!

There might be musicians living in there storing their road gear in there!

I had a smart-arse comeback... but YouTube is being a prick and won't embed my clever attempt to counter that quote.

I'll just take a rather menial, and low-effort win... much like Liszt-and-the-galops does on a frequent occasion with his rather mundane reading of the dictionary.

Your fire, it's growing dim.

You should sit in a corner playing video games, and drink some "hard seltzers" if you feel frisky.

Yanni was almost as great a musician as George Winston...you could learn some of that.  And some of the video game music too, and some of the comic book movie music.
